Hello. I've been playing many LAN games on the lovely RiFE lately, and they have all ended in a premature death- the OoS error. Naturally, I took to the CivFanatics forums! And I found a solution, or so I thought: Simply holding shift clears the cache, which is responsible for OoS errors. So, I happily fired up RiFE, holding down shift for the life of me.. And there was no change. The OoS errors seemed to come later in the games, but it certainly did not fix them. Furthermore, even reloading the game didn't help, the OoS error occurred every time we hit the original turn it took place on. I also attempted to manually clear the cache, thinking this whole shift bit was a little bit exaggerated. On Windows XP, I was unable to find the file (Yes, I know the file is hidden, and I know how to see them) "My Games". I dismissed this to clearing the cache before, but perhaps I am missing something?

Nonetheless, I am fairly stumped. If this shift trick is working for everyone else, I must wonder what's going on with my computer and/or LAN games..

Cheers, and thanks for reading.

You get a lot less OOS errors if you begin the game in an alliance with the other player/players. (To the point where my flatmate and I only got OOS errors when one of us crashed).

In the case of someone crashing (or if you don't start in an alliance - whenever any kind of barbarian with a bow fires :P) - the only solution we ever found was for the player left in the game to save and continue playing.

Then either quit and rehost (which usually resolved the OOS error) or else sometimes a turn had to be played and then a host up of the new save game (1 turn further on) was required.

I've never had any luck with that shift thing and don't believe it works. My flatmate was unable to find the files required just as you say you're failing to find them. (I never tried :P he studies IT and I don't so if he can't do it, I can't).

We have never ever managed to have an OOS error and have someone leave and rejoin and get it to work that way. (which obviously works in regular civ - it also works in Fall from heaven without the modmod).

Interestingly enough if you get the oos error due to the archer thing, you can actually both keep playing (and data will continue to be sent between the players about ending turn and the like) but in actual fact the other player in your game is not doing anything at all at the time. - Not even being played by a computer. Which is really odd.

I've had success saving the game after the OOS and then rehosting. Sometimes the OOS would re-occur every few turns, making it annoying to complete a game, but still possible if the game was near an end.

Barbarian archers? Interesting. Yea, on occasion I am able to quit and rehost the game.. But usually the OOS error hits the very turn it did in the first game. See, I haven't heard about anyone suffering from that kind of OOS error.. So, I am at a loss. :P

Perhaps I will try the alliance solution- It is certainly better than nothing.

EDIT: Just a thought, but perhaps the OOS errors are occurring for me on the same turn every time the game is rehosted because the AI is firing their barbarian archers on that turn?

if you're reloading the auto-save then yes, it's quite possible that the barbarian archers are firing on the same turn for one of the players and that's what's creating the oos error.

Or maybe a great person is being born (the only oos error I get in Fall from heaven regular is when a great person is born - sometimes the game creates a different person for each player and that usually requires a reload).

I'm certain you have to save and rehost though to get past it.

Ahah, I see. Then that would be the cause of my woes.

Thank you very much, it is very useful to know what is causing these errors. Is there a known quick-fix for the barbarian archers? I might just turn off the Barbarians' ability to build archers if there isn't, it's not worth it to me. Haha.

I'm having a similar error, My friend and I have started playing as a Team and the OOS errors went away, but now we have a sudden rash of "Waiting for Player" screens that will come up as if one of us disconnected. We are on the same LAN network, using Direct Ip to connect. Hell, we yell across the hall at each other. We can still ping each other and the net works fine while this happens so it's not an actual connectivity issue, but I'm near my wits end with this. We save and rehost several times but it just happens again the next turn or two turns down the road.

I'm afraid I haven't had any experiences like that - playing on a lan network on the same team we generally get very few oos errors and rarely get waiting for player errors.

We tend to play with Ventrillo on (connected to someone else's server) so if that stops working it usually means the router is at fault - I assume you've tried all the obvious things like resetting the router?

Yeah. I think we've found the culprit now, it's the wireless on my laptop. Not sure why, but it seems to randomly disconnect. When we plugged it in with a cable it worked fine.

Of course, now we started getting OOS errors again.

Damn it Civ. I've never had this much trouble playing a multiplayer game.
