Oxford University

You English, what a bunch of "loonies". I know people that went to Oxford and Cambridge, but i heard that in Oxford they make you wear a ridiculous robe all around. That is what truly sucks.

Yeah, a CivSoc sounds fun. Shame I don't have a PC that can run the game...

I'm also up for a match against Oxford. Christmas holidays sound like a good time for me. We'd have to work out some sort of handicap so that the Oxford lot don't get completely squashed though.

You heard wrong!

In both Oxford and Cambridge, you have to wear a robe for formal occasions held by the university/college (formal halls, graduation, exams - that sort of thing)

Oxford is there just as a recognition for being the oldest univerity in the world ... I think.

It's not. The oldest surviving university is University of Bologna in Italy.

Oxford is certainly the oldest university in the Anglo-Saxon world.

Thanks for that. Since 1088 in fact!!!

I prefer my good ol' London University (Queen Mary College) to Oxbridge, especially for the course I'm studying. Perhaps we should set up some sort of league (when the game comes out, obviously) in which universities can challenge one-another? A sort of University Challenge, minus Paxo.

Minus Paxo? Are you kidding?

Just be glad they didn't make it Harvard for God's sake considering that people are complaining about Rock and Roll*

*(which btw it would have been better to roll Rock and Roll, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Big Band all into one broadcast music category or something but whatever, Rock and Roll was what Pop is today and what the others were earlier in the century plus they need a John Phillips Sousa wonder, obviously)

Well, can you find the money to hire him to commentate on the games? Mind you, that could be quite funny, given how sarcastic he is.

No one cares how old the university is anymore than anyone cares who the oldest civ was.

The civs that are in the game are well known because of their importance. Oxford is well known for its importance being the first modern university. Also being one of the best school's in the world's biggest colonial power doesn't hurt either.

I have a mate in Oxford, all he does is watch children's TV from the 80s and go rowing.

That means it has to be one of the worlds best universities. Most of 'em don't bother with the rowing. ;)

You're just jealous that we got Harry Potter ;)
Eh? I'm jealous now. I didn't know you had Harry Potter!

In what way have you "got" him? I'm interested now! I know they film some parts in Oxford, but then they also film some in London, Durham, and other places scattered around the UK. Also I think the girl who plays Hermione is from Oxford...

This last part is Civ related, to keep in on topic...

Does anybody have Civ 4 in the UK yet? I know it was out early in other parts of Europe, but I haven't gone looking for it yet.

Yes, Bologna is the oldest University in Europe. But the wonder Oxford is built after you already have a certain amount of Universities (if I am not mistaken) so it is not about the first University but about making a pole of excellence.

The first one of this type, and probably one of the most influencial in Europe in the Renaissance would be Padua as far as science is concerned. The biggest Universities during that time are: Bologna for Law, Padua for Science (Medicine), Paris, Oxford and Cambridge for theology.

Now now people lets not troll.
Cambridge sucks, Oxford rules !!!

@Apple:

The big dining hall in Hogwarts is actually in Christ Church (Oxford). Probably other stuff too, but that's the thing I know about.

Given what you said above though, it sounds like it isn't so much that we have HP as you don't have him. Sucks to be you!

Oh and, ahem, Oxford university makes a fine wonder for exactly these reasons. :mischief:
