Since Civilization IV: Colonization was released, a few more articles have been published. One of them, a review at PALGN, appropriately subtitled "A game of three halves", gave Colonization a score of 8/10, concluding that the game, while perhaps not a great magnet for people new to the Civ franchise, still provides an entertaining experience:
The water effects are particularly attractive and everything runs in a smooth and bug-free fashion. Some of the resource icons used in the game are a little small and obscure, which in turns renders certain information screens hopelessly baffling, but it's a problem that largely fades away after a few hour's play. Units are well animated and the terrain is detailed enough without getting too busy and chaotic.

While it's unlikely to convert anyone who can't see the fun in slowly nudging swarms of candy-coated numbers in positive directions, Colonization is a great addition to the Civ IV stable. And who needs sleep anyway?

I heartily assent to this observation: "Some of the resource icons used in the game are a little small and obscure, which in turns renders certain information screens hopelessly baffling." The symbol for furs looks like an opossum which has been run over by a car and then draped over a box. And who was the genius who decided that the icons for sugar and silver should be practically identical? And one really has to stare hard to tell the difference between tools and guns. The icon for cigars is also rather hard to identify. On top of that, I do think the roads should be just a little more visible.
