I'm getting my new rig set up, and I'm wondering what size to make my partitions. XP home for gaming, Ubuntu for just about everything else, 2 WD 120GB with RAID 1.

I couldn't see a way for my copy of XP to format other than NTFS, so I'll probably need a swap partition in FAT32 so I can get at stuff in both OS's.

How small can I make each OS's partition without fear of problems, and will I need more than the XP, Ubuntu, and swap?

Well, you can make the OS partitions for both XP and Ubuntu rather small, but then you need additional partitions to hold the "non-OS" stuff. ;)

But I daresay that 5G for each OS would be more than sufficient (at least for Ubuntu, I have little to no experience with XP).

BTW, check out CaptiveNTFS for a Linux tool that can write to ntfs partitions. It uses the existing WindowsXP ntfs drivers to do the work, so it is as safe as writing from XP. :)
