Since tech trading is gone, how about a different tech balancer. What if we make it more historic, like research being slowly gained from passive forces like:

-Compass slowly inches forward without research if you have a trade route with a civ that has it.
-Conquering a city that has a castle will give a small boost toward whatever tech you need to build it.
-Defeating a musketman can give you a small boost toward gunpowder.

This is just an idea, and I'll probably be flamed for it, but any comment for or against is welcomed.

I LOVE the idea. Probably won't be in the game though. It seems kind of complicated to implement/balance. Someone should mod your idea, if it doesn't already exist.

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

In EU3 you get neighbour bonuses to tech research. That in addition to your ideas would certainly be a good addition to ciV I think. :)

In Civ IV, techs are less expensive if you know other players who already have the techs. So I think they already have something like that in place.

Yeah there already has been a not too obvious 'catch up' mechanism for technology. I imagine they'd use a system like Civ IV because it covers a deficit in any technology equally, and has fewer possibilities for exploitation.

If you can set up research agreements with all of the other Civs, you should be able to rack up quite a huge bonus while all of them get only the small bonus.

It would be neat if there was a process whereby you somehow accumulated points toward getting obsolete/new techs since your civ never exists in a vacuum. When the sewing machine was invented in the US it spread to other parts of the world eventually. On the other hand when the atom bomb was invented, other countries mostly had to figure out how to go about it on their own so I guess this might not apply to all techs, particularly military advancements.

So I think something along the lines of the OP might be a good idea. :)

Maybe, but with all the new diplo changes, the AI might be smart enough to know if you are making agreements with other civs and know when you are exploiting them.

I remember hearing every country with the technology to make nuclear bombs, "acquired" it from other country. (except, maybe, America.) :p
