I bought Civilization IV.
I tried to install Patch 1.74
It "downloaded" all the bytes
When trying to install, it got to the end, but thena pop-up box said that an error had occured and that it could not complete installation.
The actual window where installation had occured claimed that the installation was complete
When I try to go in to the game, I get a message saying that BOOST_PYTHON-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL is missing, and that reinstalling may fix the problem.
When I go to "Add/Remove Programs" through the control panel, the computer refuses, and a pop-up window comes up saying that "error 5004" has occured.
I tried to contact 2k Games/Firaxis, and have gotten no replies.
It appears that I have Direct x 9.0c

What's wrong? :(

For reasons best known to themselves Microsoft regularly update DirectX 9 without updating the version number. You can get the latest update from here

Doubleclick it to extract it somewhere you can find it, then run the dxsetup from that location to install it. Or just reboot and try the game if you used the web installer.
Are you trying to run the multiplayer Pitboss?

Ummm...I installed Patch 1.74, and then got the error described above. I don't think that patch has anything to do with whatever you just described (multiplayer PitBoss)

What "it" are you referring to? Because I searched DirectX and got a LOT of results. Three of them are folders. Which one is it?

IIRC the link I gave you points to the dxwebsetup.exe. Doubleclick that executable and follow the prompts to update DirectX.

This error (boost_python) has been reported to happen when trying to run PitBoss from the wrong Civ folder. If you're not doing that, then it doesn't apply to you picket.
Can you confirm that you've successfully installed the DirectX Sam linked?

Yes, I have successfully installed the DirectX on that link.

There is something called PitBoss in my folder...which folder is PitBoss supposed to be in?

My PitBoss.exe is in "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4".

(im just thinking with ur boost python error not the occurences in which it happened)

try the fix that fixed mine (gawsh i had to figure this crap all by myself :/)

1: look in ur civ 4 folder..try playing civ 4 to see which Dlls u need (all the Dll are in civ 4 folder) ((the diretory path is C:\program files\firaxis games\civilization 4))

1.1 place the Dlls you need in the C:\windows\system 32 folder

NOTE: if you dont have a DLL get it here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/index.shtml

2: you should get a binkw32 error.

go to your civilization 4 shortcut properties (in right-click menu((bottom))
(shortcut on desktop)

2.1: Change the target to:
"C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Civilization4.exe"

3: Go to C:\Windows and find the Civ 4 application.

3.1: Move it to C:\program files\firaxis games\civilization 4

if it works....your welcome
