Patch install for Windows 8.1

I am new to the Civilizations series of games, but not to modding in general. I recently purchased Civ 4 and am trying to install patch 1.61. The game appears to be playing before I tried to patch it but I like keeping my games up to date. I downloaded the patch and unzipped it. When I clicked on it to start it says it cannot find the game on my computer. The files are located oat C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold and the game loads and plays but the patch cannot find it. Any ideas on how I can get this to load?

Does this "Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold" edition already include BTS?

If yes, then i suspect your problem is because the Civ4Patch1.61 was made to update an installation done with the first released disc-Version of the game ("Vanilla"), and it might not know how to deal with / find later editions.

I'd try if other patch versions listed here:

work. If the version you bought includes BTS (i.e. you should have a "Beyond the Sword" link in start menu) i'd try to apply Civ4BTS_Patch_v3.17 and then Civ4BeyondTheSwordPatch3.19

The only icons that showed up are for Civ 4 and Warlords.
The About Screen reads:
Civ Version: 174
Save Version: 103
Build Version: 1.7.4.0
Build Date: Wed Jun 06 16.45.55 2007

About show's the same info on my system, "Civ Version: 174" is what Patch 1.74 will give you. Firaxis just left out the . for whatever reason, but it's the same version.
About Dialog should also say "BUILD VERSION: FINAL RELEASE"

So, your game seems to be on latest version for Civ4-Vanilla, so no need to apply any patches for that.

If you like the game i'd adwise you to get BTS. Mainly because for that, you can easily get a working Version of BUG, which improves the UI. Oh and also other mods, most expect you to have BTS nowadays. Watch https://isthereanydeal.com/ and you should be able to pick it up for < 10$ if you wait a few weeks.
