Permanent Alliances with AI

I'm trying to setup a Permanent Alliance with the AI. I've got Feudalism, as does the AI player. Feudalism says that it's necessary for either Vassalage or Permanent Alliance. In the Negotiation Menu I see "Become a Vassal" but I don't see anything about Alliances. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Does the option only show up if the relationship is very positive? (I'm running about +14)

I'm running with all the standard game options, except No Tech Brokering.

I'm pretty sure it won't work unless you have "permanent alliances" checked-off when you started your game, so unfortunately you're out of luck. :(

I would suggest going into civgameoptions.xml in your assets/xml folder and setting the options you prefer to permanent. Unfortunately permanent alliances must be ticked at the beginning of the map in the game options- and this constantly reverts back to off unless you set it in the xml files.

Also keep in mind that you won't be able to sign permanent alliances until you've had a mutual military struggle or defensive pact for a long time.

Just be wary that the AI will form it's own Perm Alliances if they are able. Last time I had this option on, the Hippus and Doviello created a perm alliance while me (khazad) and the Luchiurps formed a united Dwarven front. The problem was that the Hippus and Doviello alliance was HUGE. And with Huge I mean almost at the domination limit.

I find that those AI permanent alliances tend to take Civs #3 & 4, put them together, and boom they shoot to the top fast. The AI never likes me enough to ally, since I "declared war on their friend" on turn 100 with a few warriors...

I think that a couple leaders might have to low a threashhold for permanent alliances. Whenever Falamar is in first or second place he always seems to sign an alliance with the other top player, especially if one of those was a follower of the Empyrean and the other of the Council of Esus. (the first time I noticed this, Falamar, the founder/follower of the Empyrean who was friendly with everyone else with his state religion, signed a permanant alliance with Rhoanna, founder/follower of Esus, and in doing so declared war on all other Empyrean and Overcouncil Members (I had used the overcouncil diplo boost to get all of them to declare war on her when she attacked me). At first I thought this was just a chance occurance due to the "you are charming" bonus between Falamar and all the women, but the next game an Esus Falamar quickly signed an alliance with an Empyrean Sandalphon, who is a male.)

That's probably due to the hidden nature of CoE - AIs don't know that players are following it, so they don't get the big relations penalty for different state religions. If you adopt CoE yourself, you'll notice it's much easier to keep a number of AIs in your good books than as any other religion.

Interesting, I always play with Permanent Alliances, and I've never seen one from the AI until the current game I am playing, and guess what ? It is between Hippus and Doviello... (Rhoanna and Mahala).

Alexis likes to vassalize people in my current game - then she signed an alliance with Tebryn. The world's going to hell pretty fast. Good thing pirate coves can't be hurt by hell terrain.

Blakmane,
I don't seem to have the civgameoptions.xml file. Could you please send me yours? (Or how else could I get it?)

I hate setting all the settings each time.
Thanks.

Are you sure your looking at the right place?

It should be in the ffh mod folder then assets then xml then gameinfo folder.

You should have it becuase without it i don't think you would even have any settings to select.

Either you have CIV4GameOptionInfos.xml or you do not have the mod itself. The mod will crash if you try to start it without that file.

Thanks, I found the file and made my changes.

Does any one know what file to edit to change the default number of players?
I want to change large map from 9 to 12.

Thanks.

I think I will have my first foray into the .xml files.

Great tip!

One thing though, will this make me a *MOD* (as it appears in the staging room)?

Thanks
