There seems to be multiple formats with that extension:
PIC - Lotus PIC Graphics Format
PIC - Micrografx Draw! Graphics Format
PIC - Pegasus Imaging Corporation Format
PIC - Video Show Graphics Format

I can't find a viewer that will display the format that the CIV files are in.
Where did you find a viewer that will work?
Web site & file name?

Select a civilization 1 file with a pic extension.

Than use the 'option' open with of the menu with possibilities.

Than use the 'option' (checkbox) select from list

Than browse to your pic.exe file.

I would be nice to edit this files. Anybody knows how to do that?

Thanks - Marx
It works the usual way in dos >PIC C:\MPS\CIV\picfile.PIC

I just could not get it to work at the dos prompt in win2000.

The question I have is which one of the PIC formats are these files.

PIC PC Paint bitmap
PIC Lotus picture
PIC Macintosh PICT drawing

Have you given any further thought into disassembly of the PIC.EXE to determine the PIC file format?
If you have the skill and laziness is your only hindrance to determining the format, I wish you would reconsider and take on the challenge.

If anyone has discovered the format of the pic files. I would like to see the specification. Does anyone have skill in the area of graphical files to determine the format ?

After some thinking I decided there's no need in this. Anyone who wishes to write a mod or something can just capture the images from the game and then save them in separate files, as you did in TerraForm. Why use old and ineffective formats?

I thought some one had posted an idea of modifying or editing the pic files to introduce other characters as leaders. I can't find that post. It did seemed intriguing at the time, but nothing I wanted to pursue. When you started this thread you did not really indicate the reason. I just assumed that it was along those lines.

I guess I don't follow "write a mod or something". I assume that you mean a program to modify the MAP or SVE file. I occasionally read post to the other three CIV forums (II III IV) and see the use of the word mod, that context does not exist in CIV DOS. Here in the CIV Dos world it's write you own, dissect the file or exe determine the format and lots of trial and error.

I am not sure what you are implying here. Maybe I've missed the boat here and there is some easy way to write editors (sav or map files) that I missed. The graphical interface that TerraForm presents to the user has nothing to do with the manipulation of the underlying data. It is just convenient to use symbols that CIV players would easily recognize than have them look at ones and zeros.

The PIC.EXE file was helpful in capturing some of the terrain and unit images. It is unfortunate that the author of the program is unknown.

The answer of course is that That CIV Dos uses this PIC format.

Let me turn this into a general request. I would assume that if you are reading this you are a fan of CIV DOS. If anyone has the skill and graphical knowledge or likes a good puzzle. Knowing the specifications of the PIC file would be helpful.
Feel free to PM me if you have these talents.
Thanks.
