Please improve the combat system!

If I want to play a strategic level war game, I play Hearts of Iron 2 or Operation Art of War. If I want to just build stuff, I play SimCity. If I want to do something in between, I play Civilization, and I hope it remains that way.

So yes, the current combat system is naive and unrealistic, but it's good for this type of game.

I agree with this. Civ is a unique game, why try and cross-pollinate with others? The RTW/Civ hybrid sounds good until you stop and think about how many battles get fought in the average game of civ... you'll either end up skipping battles or disabling the feature, and firaxis aren't going to fundamentally change an aspect of the game a lot of players will simply turn off (and if you don't have the option to turn it off, that will definitely alienate players)
Civ is what it is. If you wanna play an RTS, play an RTS. This is why there are different genres of games.

Imo Civilization has become too much war-oriented already (we now have a expansion named WARlords). There's very little room left for players with peaceful playing style in Civ 4.
Actually I feel it more like too much "Multiplayer-oriented". I wanted the space race would be more interesting not simplified. I hate they changed this for multiplayer yet I have never seen any multiplayer game yet won by SR. I wish there were more options than civ2 not less as well the race to AC itself. The space race just haven't been the same since civ2.
