How many cities do you usually settle?

Well... it depends on the civ I'm playing, my objectives in this game, if any, the number of opponents, and the speed of the game, where I find myself planted in the map, what opponents I have close by, and other things too....

Often my tactics will change during a game depending on how it's going.

So there can be no true answer to your poll for my style of play, as I tend to do things a bit differently every game, I find that more interesting, especially if you play random civs and maps.

Four. I build the fourth after Iron Working, specifically to grab iron not in range of the first three cities.

3-5, although I tend to go for 4 if I have room and a good location to expand. I will add a 5th small city if it is needed for a resource or something.

4 seems to be the sweet spot for me in general. I tend to not do as well with 3 cities although other like it.

I settle like crazy. From cutting off huge swaths of land for myself right at the start of the game (usually 5-8 cities for this alone), to seeing how deep into AI territory I can get a city placed just for antgonistic purposes, I wind up with a lot of them. I find it great fun to manage to plop a city on the other side of a continent totally surrounded by future buddies who end up howling in anger.

Another fun thing I like to do is declare war with AI on the other side of the map and then when they come crying for peace, I'll demand a city or two or three and then raze them all except one. (selling all the buildings first) Trying to hold that one city so far from safety adds a bit more flavor to the game for me.

Juggling the unhappiness from all this just makes it more interesting.

I don't settle too many cities unless there are couple luxury resources in which I could benefit to trading them with the AI (other civs)

3-5 is definitely normal. I get every possible new luxury I can find at any cost.

Usually 3-5 for me. It depends on how aggressively the AIs are settling near me in any particular terrain. Sometimes there's no room near by and I can only get 2-3 cities in, in which case I'll puppet what's around and consider the best puppet/s for my needs as a candidate/s for annexation.

I used to only settle 1-2 cities, but I find I get a more robust empire up and running more quickly settling 3-5 cities. I usually never settle a 6th city unless it's of vital strategic importance and I never go above 6 as it just bogs social policies down too much for me.

I like to pick random map/random civ combos and so flexibility is key. I will judge my surroundings and settle as many cities as I think makes sense. Frequently that is just 3-4, but I would say 5-8 is probably more common. Occasionally, up to around 12-15. Then again, I turn random games into OCCs pretty frequently as well.

...so 1-15?
