The two-hundred-and-eighty-fourth episode of PolyCast, "The Salt Would Be Real", features regular co-hosts Daniel "DanQ" Quick, Stephanie "Makahlua", Philip "TheMeInTeam" Bellew and "MadDjinn" with returning guest co-host Jon "CanuckSoldier" Ryder. It carries a runtime of 59m59s.

The summary of topics is as follows:

- 02m14s | Senate
Strategies playing as, and against, the Civilization VI civilizations of Kongo, Japan (15m28s) and Norway (21m02s).
- 25m56s | Forum Talk
How to expand the naval line in CivVI, improving the game's religion mechanic (31m09s), tackling the Artificial Intelligence (AI) combat bonus on Deity (40m39s) and replacing the current replacement mechanic when loosing out on a Wonder of the World (51m18s).

- Intro/Outro | Assorted
Gift substitution, what a game crash really means and tongue twisted.

PolyCast is a bi-weekly audio production recording live every other Saturday throughout the year, in an ongoing effort to give the Civilization community an interactive voice; sibling show ModCast focuses on Civ modding, TurnCast on Civ multiplay.

I really liked the discussions on Naval and Religious combat. Several good points were brought up. I totally agree that naval combat is under developed.
I find that religious combat can become tedious. I have won exactly 1 Religious victory in 600 hrs played, and that was for the achievement. Another area I would like to see discussed is Air Combat, or lack of it, and how things would change if the AI were competent with it. Thx for another great episode.

While CivVI air combat hasn't been addressed as a specific topic on the show to date, it has been alluded to on a few occasions since the game's release.

Thx for another great episode.
You're welcome, and thank you for the timely and complimentary feedback -- glad you enjoyed the listen!

Great episode guys, I was glad you discussed the Naval thread - it's an area of the game that till manages to feel pretty basic even though they shipped the game with features like coastal raiding and privateers. Of course the panel were right in that any new additions in that area would need competent naval AI to go before them, but I'd still like to see the line fleshed out in the medieval era.

Good discussion on the religion game. I totally agree that religious units need to be in their own layer. I would make it a layer like the trader units have, where a trader from one civ and a military or civilian unit of a different civ can occupy the same tile. However, there is potential interaction, as the military unit has the option to pillage the trader.

Similarly, a military unit could have the option to do something to another civ's religious unit on the same tile, or it could ignore it. There could even be multiple options (perhaps depending on the relationship between the civs or policy cards or governments). For example, the military unit could execute, arrest, or expel the religious unit, each with different effects.

Anyway, thanks for all the work you guys put into making these episodes!

Good discussion on the religion game.
Thank you kindly, and for your comments with respect to the topic.

[T]hanks for all the work you guys put into making these episodes!
You are welcome: on behalf of the PolyCast team, we thank you for sharing your appreciation with us. In curiosity, how long have you been apart of the show's audience?

Not sure - it may have been in the lead up to the release of civ V? But I didn't buy V for various reasons, and stopped listening for a few years. And then I started listening again, I think, when civ VI was announced.

In that case, welcome back listener. :)

Timothy, Uber, I recall us interacting in the recent past with respect to PolyCast episode releases. How long have each of you been listening to the show?

I started listening in the run-up to Civ VI's release. Since I recall hearing you talking about the infamous leader portrait leak, that makes it just over a year now, I believe. I think I've tuned in every fortnight since then. :)

heard and generalized, sharp listener there

Huh? 'Fortnight' is a pretty common word in British English. Like "why would you say anything else?" common. :P

'Bi-weekly' is confusing to my ear, as it is ambiguous as to whether it occurs twice a week or every two weeks (although in PolyCast's case, clearly the latter). 'Fortnightly' is a much more sensible word ;).

Oh sorry, it seems like I heard the hosts using "fortnight" back and forth in a recent episode, I thought it was the last one but I listened to a couple back episodes recently.

"Fortnight" a bit archaic around here.

:) -- pleased to learn that you are on-track to becoming a long-time listener.

Photi, how about yourself: when did you join the PolyCast audience?

Hey Dan, i'd say it's quite possible i heard some episodes back in 07 or 08 when i was playing iv/bts somewhat regularly, then after that i didn't play civ for a long while. when i saw a polycast thread earlier this spring, i was like "hey i remember that show" and i've caught the last 6 or 7 episodes. almost as good as the real thing, or even better when i don't feel like sitting at my desk.

A welcome back to you as well then, returning listener.

I have listened off and on since VI was announced. Been a regular listener since last November. I try to catch the live cast whenever possible, but still listen to the edited version the following week.

A great episode as always
