Is population taken into account in anything other than votes? As in more population + markets on a planet = even more gold? Of course this would mean more military production and social production with factorys + population also. Same with research. Or is it only for planetary council meetings?

Population= tax revenue.

The more people on a planet, the more people on the tax rolls. This is why it is a good policy to build income improvements on high population planets, or to transfer population when possible to planets that have have high income rates.

Ok cool thanks. I forgot about the tax slider :p I am still pretty new to the game so far. Does that work for factories too and research labs too? Or is population soley gold income based?

As far as I know it's just for taxes. Moving population onto or off of a planet doesn't seem to change production or research output.

Impact on production is there, yet hardly as notable as the impact on tax revenue. You can go to the Governor Screen to select what your population should focus on in terms of planetary production. Depending on what you go for, you will see difference in production related to population.
