I've noticed when you give a unit the strength promotion (star icon) it claims to increase strength by 10% - but I note that the display still gives the same unit strength. For instance, an Aztec warrior should start out with a strength of 2.2 instead of the standard 2, because its has an Agressive leader (free strength promotion for melee, gunpowder), but having just finished a game with the Aztecs, all my warriors were listed as str. 2. What gives?

The bonus is applied in combat in the same way as any other promotion for consistency - if you hold the RMB over a target (or use the Go To button) it displays the odds in the bottom left of the screen, including the Combat I - IV bonuses.

I was wondering about that myself. But I noticed that the bar over a unit gets longer every time you award this promotion. Is it HP? I'm not sure if this bar is always there, or if you have to turn it on in options. But it gets longer with each use of the Combat promotions.

Just hover the cursor over the Unit in the bottom left corner, and you´ll see all strength upgrades. Not displaying it after "Strength" is deliberate for reasons of consistency, as was mentioned by BeefonTheBone.

The length of the health bar is, I think, dependent on the defence bonus that would be applied to the unit if it were attacked in that location. Not sure on the exact details though.
