Possible to play mods in multiplayer in Vanilla?

Hey all, I'm hoping to play a mod in multiplayer. I've read that it might not be possible through the interface, but I've also read that it's possible if you directly replace the core game files with the mod files, in a sense make the mod "vanilla" then just play as is.

Is this possible? If so is there some decent way to do it (I'm using VEM)?
