I'm a new player who had CTP stored for 10 years and now have installed it on XP and added patch 1.2 and hack 1.2.1.
As I said I'm a newbie and have been messing with CTP for a week of learning.

One re-occurring problem is Riots caused by Net Food = 0. I have problems with about half of my cities (currently 10 on the game I'm playing). I move the workers to the best Food tiles, I try the Max Food button, I add granaries and aqueducts, advanced farms, nets, fisheries, and still some cities riot. Even one new city with Pop=1!!!

If I put all my workers in the 'field' and them hit the max Food button, a bunch are removed and placed as Entertainment Specialists. Why? It seems that I need all workers in the fields/sea farming.
What and I doing wrong?

Second question, I just discovered that my Cannons can only Bombard when one tile away from an enemy/city. From what I've read, I should be able to bombard from six tiles away???

Thanks
Tom

It's been a looooong time since I've played CTP - for good reasons, it's not a very good game - but I'll try to help.

There are many glitches with the game, and the 'Max. Food' button is one of them. Don't bother with it, set your workers manually. I seem to recall all the other 'Max.' buttons working okay, but not the 'Food' one.

As for why your cities are rioting, there are a few possibilities. Riots are nearly always caused by unhappiness - in fact, I think the ability for an enemy to make your cities riot doesn't appear until the Modern Age. Happiness is affected by many things, not just food. If you have your Rations set too low, it won't matter how much food is harvested by your people, as most of iy won't be eaten by them, but stored.

Another reason, and the one I think is your problem from the brief description you gave, is that you may have too many cities. Once your civilisation grows to a certain size, every new city causes unhappiness. I remember the cut-off being 40 cities for Theocracies, but can't recall any of the others. This can cause even a brand new city to riot. In fact, the newer the city, the more likely it is to riot, as it has no happiness inducing infrastructure.

Check your Civ and City happiness screens regularly. You should be able to see trouble before it occures, and stamp it out ahead of time. Hope I've been helpful, but, as I said, it has been quite a while since I played the game. Also, your problem may be something completely different to what I mentioned here. Good luck!

EDIT: Forgot to answer your 2nd question. Cannons only bombard one tile away. i don't know where you got the 6-tiles idea from, maybe they have a damage of 6? I think the first unit that can bombard from more than one tile's distance is the Battleship.

Thanks for the help, Sharwood. I'm a bit more experienced now and also got a little help. I also did a lot of on-line research and am surviving better now.
You are correct that my biggest problem was Happyness. I have now learned to balance everything better between Rations, Wages and Workday.
As far as the Cannon, the Range was what had me confused. I understand that now. Someone did say that eventually I will run into some Unit that can attach from a greated distance than one square.

Anyway, thanks for the reply AND what similar current game do you consider to be much better?

I suffered much the same problem when I first started, so I had a feeling that's what your problem would be. I do know there are units that can bombard from range, but don't actually remember what. I'd get my game out and check, but I don't actually think it would work on this computer. Not without patching, anyway.

I haven't played CTP2, or CIV, only Civ III. I found it far more enjoyable than CTP. Haven't played it in a while either though, as I went on an RTS kick and played all the WarCraft RTS games in order. Lately I haven't been playing anything, I've just been reading instead.
