I would like to play Civ IV over the internet, with a friend. Can you and another person play by yourselves and have the computer AI fill in for other players? If this is possible, how is it done?

Yes, it's simple enough to do. When you set up the game password protect it so no one else can join. Give the password to the other player so they can get in. Then just fill in the extra slots in the set up screen with as many AIs as you like (it'll normally put in some by default if you're below the normal number of civs for the map size).

-Open up your command prompt
-Type "ipconfig" and find your ip address
-Start Civ IV, Click Multiplayer, Click Direct IP Connection, Start a Game
-Give your friend your IP address
-They Start Civ IV, Click Multiplayer, Direct IP Connection, Join Game with your IP Address
-Talyor the settings to your preferences.
-Start the game.

Firewalls can greatly complicate this however.

ipconfig will only work if you do not have a router of somesort in between the computer and the modem.

I recommend www.whatismyip.com it will tell you your true ipaddrss if you have a router in the middle there.
