problem with game map

When I load a game of Civ II MGE, the game map does not open; I just get a back ground screen, but the legend on the side that tells you what unit is highlighted shows up fine. I have to load a game from the menu to make the map show up. I've been playing the same way for years. I have recently downloaded some new scenarios and modpacks, but they are all kept separate (I copied the entire Civ II directory and overwrote each one for each modpack, then made separate shortcuts). Does anyone know why this would be happening? Did I inadvertently change a setting, or something easy like that?

Try deleting the civ2.dat file in your Civ2 folder.
