As an oldie Civ and Civ 2 player, I got really  when I see C3C. I am reading exceptional documents in Strategies part of this site (many thanks to creators of them) but each new thing I learn (very naturaly) makes me more .

In the old days I have a common initial production order for each city I create as somewhat like the following: Defender, Barracks, Settler, Granary, Settler, Attacker, Library, Attacker and so on.

Reading the documents about the Workers, I am trying to make a plan (ok ok, I know that a strict plan will not work) for C3C now. And of course I can not decide anything.

May I guess something like: Defender, Barracks, Settler, Worker, Settler, Worker, Attacker, Worker, Attacker, Attacker (Library, Uni, Research Lab will be my hiper priority prods again) will work fine for a start?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks for all the responses in my Automated Workers thread BTW :goodjob:

You shouldn't hold yourself to a particular production order. Whatever you need, build :)
It varies alot depending on where you are in the world, who you meet, and what type of terrain surrounds you. The only guide I can give you is that I like to make about 4 explorers as early as possible, plus a defender. Once that's done, i'll build a settler.
That applies to most of my games... (which are played on Standard pangaeas)

Yes, a fixed build order is not a good idea. Typically, in my first city I build a couple of scouts (or warrior proxies), and then decide whether to build a granary. If my city can eventually produce 4 or 5 surplus food, then I start a granary prebuild immediately, get pottery, and switch to granary. If my city will never produce more than three surplus food, I get a settler as soon as possible and put him someplace that -will- produce 5 surplus food.
Once I have at least one settler factory going, my next 2-4 towns build barracks first, and then put out defenders and workers. By the time I get to a second ring of cities, I put the initial production on some kind of cultural facility. By the time I have 15 or 20 cities, a typical build order would be e.g. temple->courthouse->marketplace->barracks->units until the town starts to need a cathedral for happiness (size 8-13, depending on luxuries). If the civ is scientific, a library goes in instead of a temple. If my goal is cultural victory, then a library goes in sooner, rather than later, and I don't put off the cathedral. It is arguable that the courthouse should go first, but I like to expand my borders as quickly as possible.

In the end, the main point is that in the first few turns of the game you must build your population as quickly as possible, so one or two granaries are essential. Next, you must make sure that you are not overrun by the Mongol civ next door, so a little defense is required. After that, you need a little culture and a lot of marketplaces. And after that, you must deal with the specifics of your game goals and topography. Thus, there is no fixed build order :)
