I think the image says it all.

The gold city will be founded first, since we have a road goin' out there already. For long term benefits, I recommend the city be placed next to the gold hill, for immeadiate acess to a second gold mine, and better growth when the borders expand.

Site two is obvious. We need iron. :)

The other four marked - well, I couldn't decide what order would be best. Green is there for the double whale, yellow is a filler whose only purpose would be for immeadiate incense, and if we decide to use it would be abandon later. Blue and pink are good sites for growth and production.

Well, discuss!

I allways thought we would build the gold city ON TOP of the gold. But I guess building next to it can't hurt.

The Iron city I'm a little more conserned about. Is it wise to place it in the valley? Why not on the tile directly east of the iron, as has allready been proposed?

The others look good and could be discussed more throughfully when the two first cities are placed.

I have some concerns with this plan....

Site 1 should definitely be built on top of the gold hill. This allows us to reap the commerce benefits from that gold without having to dedicate a laborer to that tile. It also minimizes the gap between this city and Shen Ling.

Site 2 is exactly where I thought it should've gone until listening to the arguments for building east of the iron. Building inside those mountains is asthetically tempting, but I think we'd be better building on the eastern side of the mountains. Doing so will also allow us to build one more city between this site and Shen Ling.

The pink, green and blue squares all look good to me, but I think the yellow square is too far away from the capitol to be of much use. Personally, I'd build it right where our warrior is in your graphic.

I agree with building right on thop of the gold for the extra commerce, and I also believe the city one tile east will grow larger.

Octavian, I believe you were at the chat where I showed how building on the gold gives the full commercial bonus. I would much rather build on a defensive hill and not waste laborers on a low food tile to get such luxerious commerce, and actually use that bonus grassland nearby.

Site 2 should be 2 tiles east, for reasons FortyJ mentioned.

Site 3 should be where horses are if we don't have them.

Octavian X, actually I like both your city sites as they are workable. But I have to agree with the others here. Khatovar in DG1 was built on a gold hill (by my choice), and it turned into a fine gold producing city, so I think the gold hill is the best option there. Site 2 is good because we don't really need that city to grow, we just need the iron. A plus for that location is it would be easy to defend with a unit stationed in the mountains. But in 40J's info poll, I voted for location 3, as it seems to be the healthiest choice.

I think blue should go to the East 1 tile and Yellow should go to the SW 1 tile. We should forget about the green, unless we can pick up those whales from the other Island/Continent. I would stay away from the pink for a long while.

tile 2 is bad because it is NOT defendable-- enemies can easily fortify around our city while amassing an attack.

@Hygro - If it gets to the point where our enemies are fortifying in the mountains, site #3 is probably already lost. I was talking early game. Our enemies are located far away, so at this point, we're not going to have hordes of units raining down on us, even if they do know both our iron locations. If we can't keep a hand full of warriors out of the mountains, we're doing something wrong.

Pink and Blue are fine though I suggest forgetting about the yellow and move the Green one space to the east.

The yellow is to far and overlapping will occur (alot).

Thats all

edit; sorry, forgot that the purpose of the Green was for the whale, oops. The the Green is finely placed though I still suggest taking the yellow out.

I think Pink should be first after 1 and 2, then Green and then Blue. :D

Well, I'm glad I encouraged some people to think. :)

I generally agree with the the ideas suggested. I do, however, stand by my city placement 1 for the long haul. Placed on the hill, the city will have substantially lower growth potential.

I don't think we can wait for the long haul Octavian. In fact, I wanted our second city on top of the gold as well (though in hindsight might not have been the best idea). We need commerce now. We can plan our long-run cities for later.

Based on Octavian's proposal, I've come up with another version of how I believe we should proceed with city placement.

Of course, even if adopted, the plan would be subject to change as situations in the game develop.

Legend: Each dot represents a planned city site. The numbered dots represent the priority of settlement.

FortyJ's City Plan
Note: I created this graphic prior to recognizing the threat that GCA poses to our settlement of the iron ore. As such, I would recommend that the order of sites 1 & 2 be switched (ie. settle site 2 first, then site 1).

Personally, 40J, I like 1, 2 (swapped), and 5. All the others I would adjust slightly or eliminate. Except for that mountain village between #2 and the Capital. That would be a will placed future city.

4 should go one NE, 8 shold go one SE, 6 would go one NW, 7 would go one NW, 3 would be moved one North, and the blanks would be taken out (with the southern blank being a possible future city).

Well... your suggestions would certainly lead to less overlap between the cities, which was not such a concern of mine. My intention was to develop a tighter build that allowed for better defense.

However, having said that, I also must say that I have no problems with your ideas, with the exception of #3. The far NW 'blank' would be ideal to take advantage of the whales, but cannot access the incense and allows for some gaps between it and Shen Ling. Therefore, I feel that there should be another city somewhere between the two.

Ideally, I'd prefer #3 to be 1 tile NE of it's location, but we lack the technology to build a city in the middle of a lake at this time. ;) Another possibility would be to move it 1 tile E (onto the forest), but that's a game tile and I didn't want to waste that bonus by putting the city on top of it. Moving the city N or NW conflicts too much with 'Harpoon Point' and moving the city SW, S, or SE would conflict too much with Shen Ling which I wouldn't do on a bet.

I think #3 could be an important little suburb of Shen Ling. A quick temple and we'll be able to bring incense into the network, allowing Shen Ling to grow to size 6 without fear of civil disorder. Additionally, with the game tile nearby, it could become a nice backup producer of spearmen which could escort the settlers coming out of Shen Ling.

Oh... and I too am in favor of settling site 2 then site 1, which I will poll immediately.
