protect elite units in battle!

I have found the AI attacking my newly veteran turned to elite units. This seems to be the case every time I battle on Emperor Mode. So make sure when in battle you have enough defense units to guard your new elite unit who is usually a bit weakened form battle. otherwise he is gone!

i thought they usually attacked the weakest unit available?
but if it's in a stack, IIRC, the most promoted unit always fights first

When the AI attacks stacks I'm pretty sure that the unit with the best defence will be attacked first.

Not sure exactly how it calculates the best defence, but a vet spear will clearly go before a regular spear, but a regular pike will go before a vet spear. Annoyingly I just found that my elite Medieval Infantry defended before my regular Pike, and lost two elite MI's in one turn even though I had the Pike defenders. Also if I had a chance to fortify that Pike, I'm sure that he would have defended first (I'm just doing that bit from memory).
