I am trying to scan some photos and burn them to a dvd as a slideshow as I think that is much better to show a bunch of people photos than an album.

If I scan my photos what DPI ahould I scan them at? I did a test disc and had the same photo scanned at 300, 400, 600 and 720 DPI but I could not tell the difference between them on the screen even on the big screen which is 140cm!

I thought the higher DPI I could scan them in at the higher the quality would seem on a bigger TV. But there is absoultely no difference in my test, which makes me believe maybe it is in the software?

Does anyone know anything about this or what type of program will give my high quality slide shows on DVD?? I am using Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 with the latest patch which allowed you to 'save the original image to disc' which apparently is supposed to improve the quality.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Actually, DPI will make squat of difference if viewing on the TV unless your picture is very very small (about 2 inches wide or less). Full DVD quality for PAL TV (I see you are in Syndey and not USA) is 720x576. Because of this, the size of the TV does not come into play. While its not 100% accurate, think of a larger TV as just having larger pixels, not more pixels. So, to maximize quality, you pictures should be as close to that as possible without going under.

Bottom line, scan in the pictures at the lowest DPI that will get you just above 720x576 pixels.

Ahh... that makes sense, I didnt know that. Thanks heaps for your help, you have saved me from managing the mega files I have been creating!

Just another thing, as my scanner lets me choose DPI only, will a photoshop type program tell me how many pixels it is?

Did a quick test and on a standard 150mmx100mm photo (I think thats 4x6 inch for imperial measurement countries) and it seems a 150 DPI scan will produce 885x589 pixels which is the closest to 720x576 as 100 DPI drops below.

So for anyone else interested it seems a 150 DPI scan will on your TV produce the highest possible quality through the DVD format.

Thanks again Cracked crystal

no problem.

Let me direct you to a great website. I learned almost everything I know about DVD creation there.
