Garwulf
Chieftain
Hi all!
With nothing better to do, I figured it might be an idea to try a little experiment. A Quantum timeline succession game.
Quantum timelines is a theory that some SF authors hold. It basically runs like this: every time you make a decision, a brand new timeline is created. The dominant timeline is the decision that you actually made...the other is what would have happened if you had done something else. This is the idea behind alternate history (such as Harry Turtledove loves to write).
So, here is how the game is played. Anybody can download the game. They play for about twenty turns, writing up a timeline as they go, and then post the timeline along with the new savegame. So, in theory, one person downloads the original game...two people download the first person's savegame, and each posts a write up, with an attached savegame. Anybody else can then grab any of the four games (original, first person, second person/timeline A and third person/timeline B), play around twenty turns, and post a write up. Just mark where you started from and make sure you mark it as a separate timeline if you're branching off.
(As far as marking timelines go, it is first come first serve. So, if person A posts their game first, it will be a continuation of timeline A. Person B would be timeline B. Any splits on timeline A would be a new letter, while splits on alternative timelines would be a combination of a letter and number. For example, somebody posting the first follow up on timeline B would still be timeline B, while a second person with timeline B would start timeline B-2. Yes, I know it sounds complicated, but it is actually easy to sort out.)
In theory, there are infinite variations. It should be an interesting experiment, if nothing else.
So...the game as started is: CivII MPG edition, Prince level, large world, Celts, Medieval towns, 7 civilizations, standard rules, barbarians at Restless Tribes. I've played about twenty turns, and tried to give the game a good start.
Timeline A:
4000 BC - Cardiff founded (Chieften breaks leg kicking sheep out of the way; invents world's first four-letter word).
3900 BC - Alphabet discovered (Despite rumors, local wise man refuses to give credit to his chicken).
3780 BC - Kells founded ("We just had to get away from those BBC Surviving the Iron Age' cameras," new mayor claims).
3760 BC - Code of Laws discovered ("If I tell people what to do, they'll do it!" chieften reveals).
3640 BC - Cardiff builds settlers (Chieften dies from food poisoning after eating twelve raw chickens on a bet).
And thus comes to an end the reign of Garwulf the not-so-bright.
Anybody want to continue?
Best regards to all,
Robert "Garwulf" Marks
