Houdy nerdlings,

Ok, here's the deal. Quickly appraching us are the releases of the next gen processers from the respective market giants.

P5
0.09 Micron architecture
a FULL meg of cache
up to 5Ghz by the end of the year

Athlon64
Same 0.09 micron architecture (though not until later on)
64 Bit computing (with Microsoft simultaneously releasing a 64 bit version of Home XP).

Which would you go for?

P5 myself. AMD hasn't caught my eye much at all. Their new XP3200 doesnt even compare with the P4 3.0 GHz in benchmarks yet they still claimed that it outperformed the P4.

Maybe true, but with a 64 bit platform (XP) for the Athlon to run from, the performance gains will most likely be godly (in a few years time no doubt).

The OS will be fast, but the apps, if they are not compiled for 64 bit, will not give major improvement. If AMD can get people to enter the 64 Bit bandwagon, you might have one great product for the tech minded people if they can keep on with the mhz race. Most people do not know what the bit difference is, and are going to buy the pentium just because it's faster... And we all know that the actual mhz doesn't say much on the actual CPU power.

I'm going to get an Athlon64 next year when the dust has settled abit...I've heard the 64 will have a 1mb cache aswell?

The P5 will probably beat the A64 on benchmarks(wild guess!) but the price of these P5s would be through the roof. P5s are getting ddr2 long before the A64 so that'll boost them a fair distance ahead..

I think this time next year we will truly know which is best. Hopefully the Athlon64 will be victorious..its good to see Intel run for their/our money!

hmm.....
also i simply don't believe that "up to 5ghz by the end of the year"....maybe 4ghz by the end of this year and 5ghz by the the end of 2004.

That why people get professional fans, heatsinks, even water-cooling solutions for their athlons. I have used both AMDs and Pentiums and I find that with enough cooling, either brand will work fine. I won't be buying any new computers anytime soon though, since my 2.4ghz P4 should ruin most of the apps in the near future.

Of course the Pentium will beat the AMD in the benchmarks....everything is compiled for the P-chips.

But the AMD is still the better Performance-Price ratio. And I'm cheap....so what will I get?

Neither....I'll stick with my 1800+ for now. ;)

The only reason I would buy a P-chip is because of superior cooling...(well...actually it's because they don't get as hot...not the cooling) but the AMD's are improving in this area too. The exception to this rule is of course the Tutalian (or however you spell it) Probably the worse fault tolerent chip Intel ever released. I think it used an advanced P3 core....to go over 1 GHz....

Not all the time ...remember when the Athlon killed the P3 performance-wise on most things and when the Athlon/XP had 266fsb and ddr266, still kept up the P4 with 400fsb in a fair share of things also. Only when the Northwood core became available did the P4 began to beat the AthlonXP alot.

Just kinda curious. . . Where did you get your info on the P5 coming out? I hear about the Athalon 64 all over the place (useless without a 64-bit OS, btw) but I can't seem to find anything about the P5.

Hope it comes out soon. I've got my heart set on a 3 gig p4, and would like to see the prices drop.

Damn you, Toasty! *throws a squid*

Pentium fo' evah, baby! Five GHz? I'll take three!

I can't wait to see how fast a linux system that is compiled from source for the AMD64 is... there have been reports of some folks already trying out dual opteron + Gentoo, and it's supposedly insanely quick... AMD might actually might have a great shot at becoming a major server CPU, if coupled to Linux...
