Question about colonies

I am currently playing a game where I have a horrible starting position. The capital city is nice but any other city is one tundra or ice. I am playing a terra map. If I beeline for astronomy and then get Gallons and plop a new city on the other empty contanent and then build the palace in that new city can i turn my old cities into a colony and just work on filling up the other continent? I would probably have other cities up and running before I change the other two or three cities in the old world into a colony. Any has anyone done this before and been successful?

I haven't done this personally, but I've seen the AI do it. Sort of. Ragnar started out on the same continent with me and a couple other folks. Had about half a dozen cities on the same continent and four in some crappy little islands off the coast. He moved his palace from the continent to the islands, then cut all the cites on the continent loose and put Lincoln in charge.

Now, I have no idea why he did this, since it immediately made him a third-world nation, but at least we know your theory is sound. Go for it.
