How exactly does the 'pitboss' work?

Is it a remote server, me and my friends connect to and start a MP game?
Is it a seperate application (similar to FPS dedicated servers) that is run from a 'a spare machine'?

If we start a game, can we then leave and come back to it later?
Do we all need to be connected at the same time?


Just read through my brand-spankin new manual, but am stuck at work so can't play around with the game yet. Any answers would be most appreciated.

It is an application that you can run on your own. That's about all I know at the moment although I did find a pair of python scripts in the pitboss subdir.
