Hi there, sorry if this is a stupid question but I just dusted off my copy of civ 2 after all these years and wondered about something.

At the start I have about 10 advances I can research and I chose Bronze Working, then once I have discovered bronze working there are only about 4 or so choices for my next civ advance and I can't select pottery which I could before researching bronze working.

What's going on?

Welcome IAmTacoSalad to CFC

All techs are devided in three groups. The "0" group, the "1" group en the "2" group. The first time you can chose a tech you only can chose from 2 groups (e.g. group 0 and 1) and chose an available tech which is alphabeticly the highest. After the discovery of the chosen tech you can chose only from group 1 and 2 (and the highest alphabeticly tech). The next tech you can chose is from group 2 and 0 and then 0 and 1 and so on. In the great library on the apolyton site is a list of the techs and their groupnumber. I only don't know exactly where.

I hope you understand I little bit more how the tech chosing works.

If you look back at Apolyton for old threads from the Strategy forum you will find stuff about "tech hiding" - the 1/3 of techs that are not available for research each time you start a new tech. Tech Hiding is another one of the complications that the Civ designers throw our way to make life more interesting, such as Key Civs and Commodity Supply & Demand. If you want to play without it you need to save your game as a Scenario and reload.
