Howdy all,

I am just starting to get into this game again after having not played at all since early May. My question is this. Have there been any improvements to diplomacy that would make Declarations of Friendship actually worth doing? Last time I played, they were completely useless, serving more or less as an invitation for your "friend" to beg for stuff from you (and get pissed if you refused) while giving you nothing in return. Is that still the case? Thanks!

There are some additional positive modifiers now for diplomacy, including a bonus for going along with those DoF requests for resources or gold, so in the overall context of seeking good relations, DoFs are more useful than back when they were one of the only ways to pursue friendships with other civs. You also get positive modifiers with other civs if you're both friends of the same third civ.

A DoF still doesn't guarantee that another civ won't turn on you later if you rile it up or if it senses easy pickings, though. (And other civs still get miffed if you have DoFs with their enemies.)

Well they added positif modifiers like when you except a friend request it will remind this...

Same with if you trade with him it will remind it..

Hower the AI stilll makes his decission based on numbers and will atack you even with positif modifiers and it will declare and denounce other civilizations a lot because they make their decision based on numbers..

As result decleration of friendship have become a suicde mission because once you signed it more then 5 civs hate you of it because everyone hates eachother

Lol thanks for the tips guys, seems like it's still a total crapshoot. I've been turning down offers for DoW as a matter of practice and I guess I'll continue doing so, generally speaking I don't want to inherit other people's enemies for so little benefit.

It's a computer program. All computer programs make decisions based on numbers. That's how computer programs work.

Yes, if you DoF with everyone on the map willy-nilly without even thinking, you'll wind up irritating civs who are enemies of each other. So? Think about what you're doing. Problem solved.

Except that when the AI requests a DoF, it gives you no opportunity to look at global politics, and if you say no, you have to wait a few turns before you can offer it.

I'd like to see that changed, too - normally I have a fairly good idea of who's feuding with who, but being able to double-check before accepting a DoF (or a request for a DoW on a third party) would be very handy.

InfoAddict mod allows you to do this. It places a button on the Diplo screen that lets you bring up the IA screen, which has an excellent world diplomacy overview section- better than the in-game one.
