Last night I was playing a game, and I was killing everyone else in culture. Every time someone would settle on my continent (I had not-so-kindly kicked the English off), their city would eventually be assimilated into my culture. Well, at one point, a city on another continent across a large ocean wanted to join mine. I said okay, installed a governer, and then opened up a trade window with that city's original civ (China). I pulled up the city, and said "what'll you give me for this?" He gave me something like his World Map, 200 gold, and 90+ gold per turn for 20 turns. Seemed fine to me because managing a city all alone on another continent seemed like it would be annoying.

Moral of this story, if you are suddenly the owner of a city in a not-so-desirable place, try to sell it back to its owner, and see what happens.

Do city's change buy themself or due you triger it??
I have not gotten far enough to get there....

thankz

They change all by themselves. If your cultural influence dwarfs a nearby city's then they will defect.

It works the other way to, so if you have cities that are nearby an opponents well cultured area, pay for the big cultural improvements fast!

Giving cities back is a very good strategy. Especially if you got a city by culturally overpowering them. Not only can you get some good stuff in return, but how know, you might end up get the city back again!!

Cities are one of the best negotiation items. Sof i you play your crads right, you can get major advantages from it.
