Which government should we switch to? (We were in Despotism)

We're currently at war, so Monarchy might be better. But, if we finish early, Republic for trading/GPT income.

Isn't there a Beatles song called "Revolution" or something like that? if there was, I think I liked it!

Monarchy, we can't maintain war in Republic

As a matter of fact, there is. In fact, the reason it says one of the answers to "Are you sure you want a revolution?" is "Yes, you know it's gonna be alright" is because of that song, or at least I assume so, as it's a direct quote.

I voted Monarchy, because we are in War and we will be in War a while more.

Even if or when the war is over will we be safe.

Because everyone is furious with us.

If we would be safe though should our next Revolution bring us Democracy.

I voted republic, the extra trade income can be put into luxuries to counteract war weariness if it gets too bad. But I think at this point, we should be able to handle it, with the war down to only a couple of civs, and no forces actually involved against Babylon.

I voted republic because I hate anarchy.
I've traditionally changed governemnts once per game and it is to republic. (Unless I'm religious :) )
I think we can maintain the war with the three luxuries we have and increased trade if we need a few points int he entertainment side of things. I also think that a lasting peace is around the corner. If we can get out of anarchy without anyone else going to war with us, then we'll make it. :)

While I am normally inclined to choose republic over monarchy, I have to go with monarchy right now. As Grey Fox said, even though we are at peace, everyone still hates us, and another war like the one we are finishing up could easily erupt. The military police will also allow our cities to grow quickly and to large sizes. We can switch to republic or democracy later when we are more secure in our foreign relations.

As this poll was set up by one of our cabinet members, it should be considered binding. Does this require a cabinet vote to ratify? In the interest of time, I think we should stick by the results of this poll. Either option is doable....

How about that!? I've just finished reading a post by Eyrei and I don't have "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath playing in my head. Now I've got "Revolution #1".

Go figure. :D Maybe I will have to change my sig.

How about "Has he lost his mind? Can he see or is he blind?" :D

I voted for Monarchy.

It's not addressed in the Constitution (I'll fix that ;)). I'd say this falls under the President or Domestic Leader's sphere since it's not defined anywhere. I'm happy to go along with the poll results.

Incidentally, I'm also in favor of Monarchy. I'll do my best to improve our relations with our neighbors but we are right next to China who is about to start building their UU. I doubt we will be at peace for long.

I called for this poll during the last turn chat.

So I would go by these results if most of the Cabinet members are with me.

Another thing that is not covered in the constitution is who would break a tie here, if there was one. I would assume that the president would have the tie breaking vote, but a cabinet poll could also be held (this would take longer).

I'm surprised there are as many votes for Republic. While I wouldn't mind a Republic in a peaceful situation, we have been at war for quite a long time. I think War Weariness will affect us immediately (although Babylon & Egypt attacked us & seem to be doing fine in Republics). We also still have many turns left on our alliance with the Aztecs against Babylon. There are also many neighbours who are Furious with us. I'm not sure if we will have an extended period of peace soon.

There are a few things I've noticed at the History Department. I can see the trends. We are now the most powerful nation. Egypt will want peace the minute we take the next two cities (The one with iron and the capital I am assuming are the targets.)
Babylon will want peace as well. They are a ways down the list on the power scale and they might not want to tangle with #1 (There are a lot of perks to being #1 :D ).
The alliance with the Aztecs can be canceled soon. I don't recall the exact number of turns but in my last update I went into the Aztec screen to check it thier status towards us and there weren't very many turns left. If we really want to, we can be at peace as soon as the alliance with the aztecs can be canceled.
I'm just not very pro-monarchy because of the anarchy that happens during governement changes and the vulnerability we get into during anarchy. If we aren't attacked while we are in anarchy by anyone else I think we can assume we are safe for a little while.

Unless we are willing to give in to threats, we will be at war again soon. Personally, I see no shame in giving a territory map and 25 gold to continue with peace and prosperity, but the last time we polled that, the results were very much the opposite.

From the constitution:

Section J: Impeachment

Article 1: It may become evident that an elected official isn't making decisions based on the results of the opinon polls.

While not 'binding' it is clear that not following a poll is an impeachable offense.

I am curious to know why we would need a cabinet vote to ratify this poll when countless other polls throughout Phoenatica's history have been used to justify actions without resort to cabinet ratification.

This has nothing to do with leaders following polls, or impeachment. Nothing like that was suggested. However, if this poll should result in a tie, who breaks the tie, or do we stay in anarchy.
