Random events

On the subject of global warming, the change should definately be gradual (not WHAM! SWAMP! like in Civ2!). Pollution though should be less obvious globs of orange goo and more wierd smog clouds over cities and stuff.

On the subject of random events in general, I think there's great scope for adding religion into the game. A random event such as the sudden emergence of a new religion which grips some of your people. It could lead to rebellions, civil wars and so on. In Shogun Total War (OK not the best game ever, but anyway) the religion you chose for yourself and your followers was important in terms of relations with other sides and your own people.

For example, let's say player A is 75% christian and 25% muslim. There's a strong Muslim faction there and so a chance of rebellion if you don't build mosques, or whatever. Other Muslim nations might declare war on you if you treat your muslims badly, or whatever. I think there needs to be more emphasis on building and managing your civ instead of killing the others.

I'd like to see semi-random events that could be countered in various ways.
A rebellious/religious leaders appears in one of your cities, which gives you the choice to react the upcoming turns... suppress an eventual rebellion by force, use up some money through propaganda, bribe or try and assassinate the leader or let it be and hope for the best...
You should be informed of the cost, the percentage for and the consequences of success and failure, and the orders would be carried out between turns.

This would encourage the player not to use all the money on research and military but to have enough money to counter unforseen events.

PROBLEM WITH that is that it seems to me the AI knows when you have surplus gold or a tech it doesnt have and will demand it or declare war.

having the surplus around would most liky end up with you having to hand it over to whatever civ wants to hold you hostage or else war.

That's a problem with the AI that I hope they will fix, it's not like it's a feature they should try to keep...

Yes, and in a quite intriguing way. Most of our old speculations were limited to natural disasters, terrain or climate changes.

You have to love the inventiveness of the events in BTS: those local cultural and commercial bonuses, unit building or island settlement quests - it just keeps getting better the more I play! Although the annoying vermin plagues, mining accidents, slave revolts etc. always seem to happen at the worst possible moment. [In last night's game, I had just built my first iron mine and was about to start training swordsmen - only to have it destroyed the very next turn...]
