This is a cheat, but...

When I played this game as a kid, i remember being able to save before attacking a foreign soldier, and if I lost, I would load and attack again. I remember it causing a different outcome.

Now thru dosbox the outcome is always the same. Is it possible set the game to random seed, so after I save and load a different outcome occurs (like after attacks or lost city rumors)?

I'm pretty sure that's how the game was always played. You get a fixed result from combat even if you do reload and fight again. I think the concept of random seed didn't come in until later Civ games.

There are three events that each scramble the seed. For each, though, the derived results are fixed.

1. Performing an action with a "random" outcome (visiting a rumor, visiting a tribe, bartering with natives or Europeans, engaging in combat, sneaking past an enemy ship, and others). The AI doing these things also changes the seed.
2. Loading a game in-game.
3. Restarting Colonization and loading.

Kind of hard to explain, but basically if you want to change an outcome of a battle or something, each of these represents one distinct alternative. For example, if you lose a battle, reloading directly might change it. Or exiting and reloading. Or reloading and have another unit visit a tribe first, before fighting. The results are "fixed" in the sense that performing such actions, or a sequence of them, will always yield the same result. If exiting and reloading didn't help, for instance, then it will never help at that point, no matter how many times you try. It goes without saying that it's best to just play through. If you must win, bring overwhelming force :)
