Can anybody suggest a custom map size that is really large, suitible for all the 31 flavours-I mean civs? When I play civ3 I like to play big, but I dont'know what the size should be without going over the 512 city limit, the optimal tech rate or the optimal cities setting. Any help wuld be appreciated.

Here is what I came up with:

Map tiles:
std = 100x100 = 10000; 5000 tiles in CAII; 240 CF (1.0); 1x
huge = 160x160 = 16960; 12800 tiles in CAII; 400 CF (1.66); 2.56x
sup200 = 200x200 = 40000; 20000 tiles in CAII; 530 CF (2.21); 4x
sup250 = 250x250 = 62500; 31250 tiles not tested; 650 CF (2.71); 6.25x

So The CF or cost factor I used is derived from 250 maps in comparison to standard maps. These are sizes I have played many many times.

You will hit the city limit in 250 and most 200 games, even if you play Always War and are aggressive. I guess I should say, I have not tried them on levels below Emperor more than a few times.

I do not recall getting the limit on any 160 or huge map, but that could be the games. Note I only use 31 on 200 or larger and I have done a few 362x362, but that is going to be too large for 512 towns.

Thanks a lot. One more question though. What kind of map settings do you hit the city limit on? 60% land or even 80%?

I have only played them as continents and pangea as best as I can remember, other than the first PTW 250 and it was an AU game. I think it was 60% water. I doubt it will matter on 250 maps.

Heres a thread with some great advice to go along with the other good points made here

remember to have processes reduced when you get into the late game. It can save you mybe 10 seconds each turn so over 200 turns thats a decent amount of time saved.

I've rarely strayed past 'standard' map size of 100x100.

Question the 512 city cap is for each civ or all civs?

Also, which map size is recommended if the player wants to conquer everyone and take their land without having to deal with empty unsettled spots.

The 512 is for the whole game, all civs. As to the empty lands, that is more a functions of the level and the number of civs for std maps. IOW, if you play emperor or higher on a std map, I would not expect you to have empty land issues, other than some stretch of bad lands, like a mountain range.

If you play with less than the normal number of civs and play lower levels, then they will not do so well at filling the land.

There's actually a 31-civ map that comes with Conquests or Complete that's based on the Earth - unfortunately it doesn't seem to involve any Aluminium at all for some reason.

I'm enjoying the game though, playing as Germany on Warlord. There's a no-corruption mod in place as well.

Thanks for clarifying on the city cap.

No I don't have a problem with empty unsettled land in my games (on standard maps). I play Monarch/Emperor.

My question was more for the large map variants being discussed and the optimal map size/civs for the large map games which would produce as little unsettled land as possible without hitting the 512 city cap too early.
