Okay, has anybody seen this one? I have gone through hell trying to get Civ to work.

Basically, I used to play CivIII all the time, without a single problem. I stopped playing for a few months, and in that time I must've installed something that conflicts with Civ, because now the game WILL NOT start.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, downloading the 1.29f patch, getting rid of fonts (I was told having more than 255 can cause conflicts sometimes), I uninstalled Ocraware, something I didn't even know was on my system, and even deleted and edited Registry Keys, and the stupid game still will not start!

Most of the time now, the game locks up right after you choose your country and the game difficulty. it goes back to the main Civ screen and shows a progress bar, about to start a new game. After that, a new progress bar (that I never noticed before when I played the game) comes up and says something like "configuring AI players...", then "Assigning Team Colors". Right when that second progress bar completes, the game freezes. Occasionally, the game will ALMOST start (I can see the map, and the first scout and settler you get at the beginning of the game for a split second) and then I get a blue screen with the "Error 0E:0028:FF080D6A" message. I searched for this error on Google, and nothing came up.

At at my wit's end, if someone can shed some light on this for me, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

oops. You allready realized the error. Now I have no powers here.I've make a task for the moderator :)

the I/O range of your error (0028) looks like its a sound issue. Either check for an updated sound driver, OR reinstall the one you have. Also, make sure that there are no conflicts with your sound card in your Dev. Mgr. You can also go to your MSINFO32(From Start->Run), then go to "Hardware Resources" and to "IRQ's" and make sure nothing is being shared with the sound card. Aside from that, run the Direct Sound Test in DXDIAG (From Start->Run), if you gives you a message saying "Hardware buffering not supported, etc. etc." then exit the diagnostic and try again. If that doesn't do anything, then go back in there and take your sound acceleration down to NONE and try again.

You may also run MSCONFIG and turn off all items on the startup tab, then reboot and try the game again.

Uhm, my system shows that my both my video and my sound are using IRQ16... is this a problem?

THis info came from running msinfo32.

IRQ 16 RADEON 9600 SERIES OK
IRQ 16 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller OK
IRQ 16 NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 16 Creative SB X-Fi OK

FYI these are my settings for IRQ 16 and I am not having any troubles:

IRQ 16 NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24DE

My sound is on IRQ 17
