Since I've been a lurker for a pretty long time, and I've noticed you've not been playing any OSG's for a while, I present to you this game I've been playing for a few days as a way to pass the time between holidays and work.

It's Sakkra/small/impossible/5 races, and thus far has given me a TON of trouble. Nothing I couldn't handle, but quite a few close calls. I'm not nearly finished with the game, but I think I've JUST reached a point where I think I'll end up winning.

I've never posted a save game before, so if there's a problem please let me know. I also lurk on RB so, when you start a new OSG, I'd like to take part in it. Here's the first turn save, and I'd LOVE to hear how you did. I'll post a fairly short battle report once I finish my game. Happy MOOing!

NOTE: This is save game file 1, so please back up any applicable files you may have. I couldn't remember if games like this are supposed to be game 1 or game 6

PS: I wanted to post a screenshot of the starting map, and if anyone could let me know how to do this, I'd be psyched. I used print screen, but I couldn't find the right program to paste into.

They are waiting for the holidays to end beofre starting a new game. If you can capture the screen, it can be pasted into paint or any app that can handle bmp files.

I cannot recall being able to do a screen print. One way to capture and print is to use DosBox.

OK, Here goes my first attempt at a screen shot.

It did not show up. I would first convet it to jpeg if it is still bmp. Save it to your desktop and check the properties. It should show less than 500k.

If it is less than 500K you can post it here using the manage files you can see below the area that you enter the msg. This will not be available if you do a quick post.

Once you have uploaded it in the manage attachment function, do the submit.

I'm not sure what a quick post IS, so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing that...

There is a manage attachments button on the bottom, and it is in fact a jpeg of around 14k. Here goes nothing.

Thanks for all the help though, I hope it works

I finally realized i had this save today, so came back to see what is is all about, as of course I forgot and did make a note.

I see do not see the screenie. First you have to get the screen captured and saved some place. Then use the Post Reply button rather than the Quick Reply.

Then scroll down from the reply box, after typing in something, to the attacj files section. Click on Manage Attachments. A window opens to browse your computer for the file.

After you locate the file, slect the Upload button. Once you have seen the file show up in the current attachment area, come back to the post and select Submit reply and it should work.
If you see it is not showing, go back to the upload window and select properties on the attachment and cut the url. Then come back to the post and paste in the address.

Regarding map screenshots:

One thing I discovered today is that the old-style graphics make for very easy editing of images to (say) convey more information than is otherwise available. For example, here's a near-endgame map from a recent game of mine -- medium, hard, five, Meklar, yellow, diplo victory in 2550, domination in 2575, and then just milking it until 2700:

mixedmap.png

The combination lets you see the galaxy at a glance, and immediately reveals a few things -- such as the annoyance of having no toxic or radiated landings, yet one toxic rich, one toxic ultra-rich, and one radiated ultra-rich! (The large Silicoid empire had a field day with these, until I wiped them out.)

The process is simple:

  1. Using the GIMP (www.gimp.org), load up the environment map screenshot.
  2. Load the minerals map using "open as layer", which puts it as a second layer in your current image, temporarily covering up the entire environment map.
  3. Use the "select by colour" tool and click on the red in "ultra poor" or "poor". You'll see the "marching ants" black-white border around all the red parts of the image.
  4. Shift-click on the blue in "rich" or "ultra rich", then shift-click on the green in "artifacts" or "Orion". (Holding down shift causes you to add to the selection, not replace it.)
  5. You should now have all the text selected. If not, repeat last two steps. Maybe you forgot to hold down shift, or maybe you misclicked. Make sure you don't shift-click for the first one (red), but do shift-click for the other two (blue, green).
  6. Finally, pick the rectangular select tool, hold down the control key, and click-drag a box around the "legend" area. (Control-clicking removes stuff from the selection. However, it also makes the select box centred around the place you click. You can either start in the middle of the box and keep holding down control, or you can let go of control while dragging and go corner-to-corner like a normal box select.)
  7. You should now have all the text selected, except in the legend:

    mixedmap2.png

  8. Now go "Layer" > "Mask" > "Add Layer Mask" and set it to "Selection" (making sure "invert mask" is unchecked). That will make it so that only the stuff you've selected (the "rich" etc. text) will be visible; everything else will come from the layer underneath, which is the environment map.
  9. Select "Image" > "Flatten Image", scale it up from 320x200 to 640x400 (using interpolation "none"), and save as a PNG. Should compress down to about 15 kilobytes or so.
  10. Result should be as per above.
Just mentioning it in case anyone finds it handy. The idea occurred to me when I saw a recent OSG "end of player's turns" summary as an environment map, with a verbal description of where the ultra-poor and artifacts worlds were. Figured there must be an easier way to get the full picture easily. :)
