In fact, the first game of the HMM kind i have ever played is King Bounty. It was a really good one, running on the old 16bit beasts and basicaly HMM is just a richer version.

The only other game that is close to Civ in terms of addiction for me was EQ. They are different games, but the scope of each game is so great that they held my attention for countless hours, EQ worse than Civ. But now I am off EQ and on a Civ kick. I dont think I'll go back to EQ, its been out too long.
