Recapturing cities?

How come when the AI takes my city and then I retake it I not only lose all my cultural buildings but I also have to quell resistors in the city that was mine but 1 turn prior? Why would they be resisting? Meanwhile I bombard an AI city down to 0% defensive bonus and take their city. Then I hold their city for several turns and quell the resistance completely. Then they recapture the city and they get no resistance whatsoever. They also get their full 60% defensive bonus back immediately. Am I missing something or is this all messed up?

That depends entirely on how much Population % is of your own civilization's. If you have 80% Arabian, and you're playing as the Romans, chances are they'll resist your return.

Yes that is messed up. However, It works for your sake also. I think the only reason that you never notice that is, that most of the time the computer doesn't bother to wait until your defense bonus % is all the way down to 0.

I once lost my capital with 80% base culture defense bonus. I got my city back, no more cultural buildings excluding wonders, and I got 60% of my cultural defense bonus.

Nope, this was very early in the game. There was no AI city/borders within 10 tiles of it. So it was 100% my civ. I recaptured the turn right after the AI took it from me.

As for the city defense bonus, I guess it's just a bug. It should start at 0 whenever you capture a city (whether it was yours previously or not) and have to regenerate to full. It's really annoying when you have like 8 troops stationed outside an enemy city. You have to use all 8 of your attackers to take the city so your last attacker winds up in the city and all the rest are out of movement points. Then the AI kills the one unit in the city, recapturing it, and resetting the defense bonus back to full so you have to start your siege all over again. That's bogus.

Sounds like you stumbled onto a VERY unlucky bug.

Or maybe thats natural on the higher leveled difficulties... hm...

I was only playing on noble.

You sure it doesn't always do that? Do you get your cities captured often? Because I don't.

If I'm playing against a civilization who uses galleys often, I will tend to lose a backwater city that I don't care about enough to leave more than 1 defender.

Almost always when I get it back it gets it's cultural defense back, most of it's cultural border, it loses all of it's cultural buildings, and it doesn't rebel.

I usually play on Monarch, or Emperor difficulties depending on the map types I want to play and with this AI, it's not hard to lose a city if you're not paying attention.

Maybe it's because I had no culture in the city yet? Even if that's the reason it still seems like a bug to me. My own city shouldn't revolt when I take it back.

That sounds like a probable explaination. I don't think it's that unreasonable, until you've got some culture in the city they couldn't care less about you. If they're not a part of your nations culture they don't feel like they belong to you. They're just upset that troops marched into their precious city. You're as foreign as any other civ is.

The fact that a city regains their full defense bonus immediatly after recapture is hella annoying though. I'll take a looksie in the XMLs and see if I can fix that, but it probably requires Python.
