howdy...

the button when you first start a game to be able to regenerate the map REALLY needs to be there longer than the very first turn.

is there any way to extend its presence, or is it something hardcoded?

if it is hardcoded, firaxis please extend the time to sat at least the first 10 turns so you can actually see if the map is worthy to play on...if not just leave the option throughout the entire game.

thanks

I think that leaving it there for longer than a turn or two could be construed as cheating. The option has never been there before in previous games, why make it easy to exploit now?
If you really need to know whether the map is worth playing, you might as well open up the WB and just reveal the whole map right away.

I have used the regenerate map option, and it is useful for those starts where your surrounded by desert, or similar.

Another option is to save as soon as you start, then play your ten turns, and if you don't like what you've got, reload your start, regenerate, save immediately, and repeat. Though some purists will say that this is also cheating, at least you avoid the use of the WB.

The best option is to play with what you're given, and ignore that regenerate option altogether. A bad start position can make for a bad game, but it provides for a good learning experience, making you a better Civer.

I'd use that method, although I don't usually regenerate maps. I don't like using the worldbuilder, because then I'll know where all the other civilizations are, and that takes the fun out of exploring the map.

The WB also displays future resources (e.g., Coal, Uranium).

You can just reload the auto-save 4000BC and hit regenerate from there. The regenerate isn't too good though. You get a lot of the same two or three maps, though sometimes with slightly different locations.

I have had several games where either I found myself in a badly-disadvantaged starting position or (more often) made a botch of things. In such cases I abandon the game and start again from scratch. But I do have one setup of which I am particularly fond and which I have now played through a few times, always with different results because the AI does not invariably make the same decisions about city placement, tech sequence and so on. Even though by now I do know where the resources are, it isn't always possible to get to them first.
The few minutes which may be saved by map regeneration are scarcely important. After all, how long does it take to go through the setup sequence ?

i save at 4000 bc... go into worldbuilder and give it a quick once over just to make sure i'm not really screwed - then i exit reload and play. yes it's cheating but if i'm going to spend 8-10 hrs on a game i need to know if it's decent especially since i'm trying to win on harder (at least for me) levels now (prince and above).

It can be pretty major when you're talking about doing that nonsense (the nonsense being there is no quick restart) as much as 10 times in a row, looking for a decent start. How they could leave off a quick restart with the same settings, that was in CIV3, I wonder at. For the habitual restarters of the world, to have that in CIV3 and lose it here is felt quite a bit, thank you.

aye...thats the true heart of the matter.

i LOVE to play on archpeligo type of maps, so getting a good start position where you can actually place more than 1 city, and the starting city actually has some hammers..LOL..can be probelmatic at times.

in civ3, like charles pointed out above, there was a quick start, that would use all the settings to start a new game. in civ4 you have to go through the custom game screen each and every time rechecking a number of different things since it doesnt save any of those settings. to me, the regenerate map option was an attempt at a quick start. though i'd love to see a quick start brought back into civ4
