I installed the whole game and it went fine but it seemed to have problem that suggest I reinstall the game (what the orginal problem was I don't remember but it couldn't find a necessary file) so I uninstall the game and I keep trying to reinstall it but over and over I get this error message:

Feature: Default Feature
Component: Civ4 Component
File: D:\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy error)

I've encountered these type of errors (recently when installed BG2 for kicks, and worked around by putting it into another directory, but that's not working for Civ4).

I know the disc works since I've installed once, but know, I'm befuddled please help I'm dying from Civ anxiety.

Actually it may be a case of the CD not working, as it apparently didn't install correctly the first time around either (giving you the missing file problem)

You wouldn't happen to have another drive to install from, or possibly another computer to test it on?

I got the same thing going on. I had the check XML error after installing the game and tried to use a different user to install it and this is what I got.

I got to install through safe mode, but now it the game won't come up...it crashes while loading....ugg...i'm following advice around the forum, updating my Windows, XML files, and ATI drives (have radeon x300, but i see others have been able to use this card and have the game play).

Does anyone else's game crash while loading??

My specs

Dell Dimension 4700
2.3ghz
1.2gigs of RAM
Radeon x300

...

Does it just 'disappear' or do you get an error message?

Installing through safe mode may cause all sorts of troubles. Some files may not be installed correctly (as safe mode won't allow it). You should really uninstall, and then try installing in normal mode again, and post the exact errors as they happen during the installation.

Thanks for your help...
But it was the tech people who told me to install the game in safe mode...a conflict with Windows XP...

But at this point, I can't even get my DVD drive to recognize the disk at all...not even in My Computer...it recognizes every other disk I put in.

And it recognizes the disk in Safe mode (not consistently)

I've already gone through the various techniques listed on the board with no luck...

The only one I couldn't firgure out on my own is that maybe my DVD is set for slave through the jumper cables...how do I verify this...but i doubt this is the problem..as it has recognized the disc in safemode...ugg

I'm a tech support person too (not for 2k though) and I would also try something like making you install in safe mode, just to see if that changes anything. Not necessarily because I thought it was the problem :) Doing something like that is just a way to narrow things down enough to be able to pinpoint the specific problem encountered.

But since it doesn't seem to solve your problem, I think you should revert back to installing in normal mode. That way, you're sure that you'll just be fighting the original problem, instead of potentially the original problem + a new problem. :)

To check whether your DVD is set to be slave or master (not that I really think this is the problem either, but again, it's nice to be able to exclude certain common issues), I'm not sure about WinXP, but in Win2k at least, this might be found in 'Control Panel' -> 'System' -> 'Hardware' -> 'Device Manager', and then right-clicking on the drive in question, and selecting properties. On the 'General' tab there should be something called 'Location' where this info could be found, but I think that depends on whether the DVD manufacturer made it 'appear' there, so to speak. At least one of my drives shows this info, and the other one doesn't.

If it doesn't, I can't think of any other way than opening the case, and checking the back-side of the DVD, where the jumpers are set.

Thanx again;

I know my drive is the master...i figured that one out, but thanx for the directions...but I don't understand why XP won't recognize the disc, but safe mode will....oh well, thanks for your time and thoughts...
