I'm also a programmer.....but I offer all my programs for free....so Piracy isn't a problem for me.
But really. ISO is a format for a CD. In burner programs you can usually copy a CD to an ISO image and then port it from system to system and CD to CD. For Example: I downloaded Corel Linux from Corel's site (It's free ) as an ISO image. Then I put this image on a CD so I could install Linux on another system.
But you have to realize that all Firaxis has to do is make a file or directory longer then 8.3 characters and an ISO image won't work. At least not with some modifications.....of which I don't know...so don't ask.
Edit: I should meantion that an ISO image is supposed to mirrior a CD excatly. That's why pirates (software pirates that is) prefer his format, because it usually copies the copy protection too, and hidden CD files too. It is much better than compressing all the files on the CD. Because then you don't have the CD or copy protection. But the ISO has a limit of 8.3 characters, due to DOS compatibility. There are newer formats out there that can make more modern images but it's not standard so it's not the a good way to pirate games anymore.
And now that most games are windows based they don't need to worry about ISO campatibility....so they use long file names. Like I said before....you can modify the image to make it work....but I don't know how.
If I have any info wrong here...someone please correct me.
