The title really says it all. Does anyone know when Civ 4 will be out? Even a general idea, like sometime in 2005, would be nice.

If I were to make a guess (and it is just that) I'd say early November 2005.

November 15 at 13.00 hours GMT. Give or take 1 minute and 23 seconds. :p

You really think it'll be that soon? I can easily see it pushed into the pre-Christmas/Fall market of 2006. If 2005, then they're much further along than I had realized. That means that a lot of the major design issues are probably all but decided?

Yes, I do. You figure that Soren presented to the GDC in March with plans on where Civ was going, implying that the project had started already. Most publishers don't like tying up their money for more than 2 years after a project starts, so...a couple of weeks before gift buying season 2005.

Dida, Firaxis most likely has little say in the schedule at this point. They are under a contract with a publisher who owns the rights (last I heard) to the title and controls the money flow. Taking their time is probably not an option unless they negotiated a schedule with enough time and money in it in the first place.

Perhaps they should bring out a game that has less bugs in the initial release and does not need several years and expansions to be still left somewhat buggy and unfinished.

If the evil publisher only would allow them to do so. Bah. Everyone blames everyone else. :(

Will Civ 4 end like Civ 3 is probably going to end? I do not think of balance issues and stuff, but of real bugs like armies, sub-bug...

The publisher isn't evil, nor is it to be blamed for the bugs. It does control the time and money allowed on the project and has more than a little to say about creative content. Once the money runs out on previous projects a small company like Firaxis has to look to the future, not the past. They don't (at this point) have the luxury of being able to have people work on projects that aren't paying the bills. Maybe once they have a Blizzard level hit...

Enough apologizing, they should bite the bullet and clean up those last few killer bugs.

Civ4 will have expansions. This is part of the business model for PC games. You can't sell a title idea to a publisher anymore unless it has a good two expansions and an obvious series of sequels to go with it. The big boys aren't interested otherwise.

*kisses warpstorm* Ah, I love you!

Could you convince Firaxis to do so, please? You are always so good at debating! :)

Nice insight. Very interesting. Well, another year of modding a playing C3C. I can handle that. :D
