Perhaps I'm doing it all wrong but I played a couple games where I successfully created a religion, I was just focused on money/science so I never really advanced it.

The last few games, I can't seem to start a religion.

I get to choose my initial pantheon. I place a great prophet card in the civics panel and it seems to be progressing. At some point, the prophet just disappears from the great person view panel altogether. I get no prophet, the civics card disappears and I am unable to start a religion.

Am I doing it wrong or is something borked?

Overall, I'm loving this game, even with all the balance (and other) issues. The new ideas and ways of doing things make the annoyances easier to stomach.

Your competitors are either earning more great prophet points or buying out the great prophets with faith (or both). When the box goes empty, it means all great prophets for the map size have been distributed, and you were too late.

Ahhh. I thought you always had the opportunity to get one of them. I have been playing on "huge" (rather than "standard") lately. So there's just the handful of prohets to be had then.

Perhaps I'll focus more on it. I'm a man of science though. :P

Thanks! The religious part of the civilopedia gleans right past that part.

To add more great prophet points you should build at least one holy site district with a shrine, should help a lot (but on immortal and deity difficulty level, getting an early religion is kinda tricky).

You can follow your progress on the great people screen as well to see if you need to improve your output.

It's different than in 5, where you just pooled faith and one appeared. In 6, it's actual great prophet points like other great people, and anyone can buy out any for enough gold or faith at any time.

if you want a religion, you really have to prioritize faith early and get as much of it as possible. Patronage is the best way to get your great prophet and you'll need a strong faith trickle in order to get your apostles out.

You'll also need Early Empire and the +2 great prophet points wildcard policy on higher difficulty level. Building stonehenge is feasable if you started near stone but it WILL slow you down.

Failing everything else, whatsisname from Arabia gets a Great Prophet automatically. I haven't played the Arabs, though, so I can't vouch for their other abilities or units.
