Ok.. so, I know that the actual religions in the game, just like with Civ V, don't really matter as far as gameplay. I have seen a picture before of all of the available icons for Civ VI. I have not been able to find that picture again. Does anybody have a list of the icons available? I know some are repeats from Civ V. Also, some appear to be based on the zodiac, but are not (to my knowledge) based on any specific religion.

Plus, to make this more of a discussion, what does everybody think of that list? Are there any others that you would like to see added? What icons would you use to represent "your" religion?

Here you go, screenshots from the ill-fated Germany LP with all the various relgious icons.

As for my opinion, it seems fine for the most part, but a couple of the Christian crosses seem wrong. I may be wrong here, but the Eastern Orthodoxy cross looks more like what I'd expect for a Catholic cross, and the Catholic cross looks more like a Celtic cross.

Thanks... Now, does anybody know what religions they each represent. Some, I know, others I'm not too certain. And again, I know that some represent the zodiac.

The only ones I can recognize as religions are in the first image, and from the first icon they are: Buddhism, Catholicism, Confucianism, Hindu, Islam, Judaism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism. From there on they seem to be either zodiac symbols or just random.

It is sort of strange, but to be fair the Eastern Orthodoxy cross looks very like a Syriac Cross:

That being said, the Byzantine Cross vs Maltese Cross would have been more distinctive...

I think they have a good selection, though I wouldn't mind seeing the addition of some historical religions, not just religions that are major religions now. In particular, removing Tengriism is...surprising, to say the least. I do like the idea of the generic symbols, though, and would love to see more of them in the future.

Thanks... so, it looks like (from where you left off)...

  • Cancer
  • Taurus
  • Elephant
  • Leo
  • Pisces
  • Scorpio
  • Snake
  • ???
  • Aquarius
  • Peacock
  • Butterfly
  • Turtle

The ones that (to my knowledge) are not associated with any zodiacs or religions, I just put the name of the animal shown. I am uncertain of what that is between the Snake and Aquarius.

I wonder why no other zodiacs are represented? Aries, Capricorn, etc. Maybe those are to be added because there is certainly room for more.

Rome is usually one of my top civs. In Civ V, I usually picked Tengriism for my religion and renamed it "Romanism". The symbol was close enough to an eagle for me. That was before the religion mod was added... then I would pick Hellenism (if the Greeks didn't already pick it first), and either leave it the same or rename it Romanism... it depended on my mood, really.

For Civ VI, I am not sure what I will pick. Maybe the turtle (thinking about Testudo...) or possibly Scorpio. I suppose it could also be (whatever civ I play as) dependent on the game. If I start near a bunch of Ivory resources, the Elephant would be good. Or maybe Pisces if I tend toward a seafaring empire. I do like the added icons...

Just a quick correction, the one you marked as Gemini is the sign for Aquarius.
Thanks... I fixed it. I guess my own personal bias saw Gemini when I saw the symbol. I DO know that the symbol for Gemini is more like the symbol for pi.

I think that bird is a phoenix, but now that you mention it I suppose it could be a peacock, too.

What do we think the odds are that they would add Druidry or another euro-pagan religion which were very prominent historically for quite some time?

I agree but Civ themselves should not shy away from doing it. I find it disappointing that this aspect of Europe is not represented in the slightest. Be it Celtic Druidry, Norse Paganism, or even Greek or Slavic Paganism.

I'm sure they are just playing it safe. With people getting butt hurt over nothing and making a stink over it. I'm sure someone is going to start something over the fact they have the zodiac signs in there

So let's say that one of my opponents chooses the crab for their religious symbol. If I use an inquisitor to remove their religion, will I get a Eureka boost to researching Chemotherapy?

Norse Paganism, and to a lesser extent Celtic, is problematic because white supremacists co-opt their symbolism, and adopt new symbols from that milieu routinely. Any Norse symbol could become problematic in that way at any moment - anything graphical especially.

There are pantheon beliefs that are clearly call outs to various Pagan beliefs, but they're generic because they share similarities with beliefs found in many religions. Same problem for things like shrines and monuments - it's just hard to present them in a way that makes them distinctive at the granularity the game operates at.

I think the Kurghan improvement for Scythia is a pretty cool presentation of a specific tradition, and I hope this series's iteration of the Celts includes something equivalently meaningful. Maybe a henge to replace the holy site district?

Firaxis has not typically backed away from presenting content that's derived from human history unless that material is wildly loaded - like including Nazism as a playable option would be. My observation is that in 5 they tried to add things to be more inclusive of all members of their audience; as opposed to removing things in order to win the approval of a narrow segment, and there's no reason to think that's changed.

I am wondering, if it will be possible to "mod" those symbols simply by throwing new pictures in the related folder?

It's a game why do we care about offending others. You can Eliminate the Indians as China. I mean really political correctness has no place in a game based on history.

Also only allowing pagan beliefs in the pantheon section of religion insinuates that paganism is somehow lesser or inferior so if firaxis is going for Politically correct they missed.
