Religion spreads, but no contact with leader

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but it is strange.

Christianity has spread to Nidaros (Viking capital), but I coulnd't contact Ragnar,
because I haven't met him by boat. I do have Astronomy. I also have the AP wonder.

A handful of turns later the Viking leader contacts me, still no contact by boat.
A resolution from the AP, open borders with everyone, has passed.
Hammurabi, also Christian and located at my continent, has made contact with Ragnar too.
Both continents are separated by ocean.

I don't think that this is a bug. Is it so hard to believe that some of your religous fellows left your country by boat to discover new things on the ocean and found viking cities were they settled down and spread the religion?

Christianity probably spread from Hammurabi to Ragnar.
