Renegotiating peace.

I think I've only done this once, because I always forget it's available. It's kinda scary, with the messages you get, but I've read of other people using it to successfully bully other civs into 'gifts'. The only time I used it was basically to declare war.

So do you ever use this, or do you threaten a 'take this or suffer' deal, and then just declare war? Which is more likely to get you a 'gift' without a war?

I have the option turned on, but the AI always seems to use it before me. As for "take this or else" they just seem to laugh at me, then I have to declare war.

I was reading a succession game thread earlier today though, and I saw one person renegotiated peace with two different civs in the same turn to get 2 free techs!

I just think the negotiation part is pretty funny. When the AI does it, a 'polite' Bismarck will come up and say 'This agreement is about to expire, and we have no wish to continue it'. That's just such a polite way of saying 'Look out buster, I'm coming to kick your a**'.

I can't remember ever extorting gifts with 'take this or suffer', but renegotiating peace can be very profitable. I think the best I got on this was 3 techs, world map, and all their cash. I also got 3 cities once but that included a ROP and MPP.

I can be profitable if you are stronger than the civ you are negotiating with. Otherwise, this would be like declaring war.

I like renegotiaging peace, especially because I play chieftain and can break all the ai civs and strip them of their little gold they have.

It has however backfired before. Cleopatra, Catherine, they have all refused to renegioatie peace in my favor and I had to hit ctrl + alt + del to get out of the game...

Another way to use Peace negotiations is to extend a Peace Treaty. Though one should never trust the AI completely, especially if you know they are intent on war; nevertheless, there are many occasions when exending a Peace Treaty will give you the flexibility to pursue other options.

Here is an example when extending a Peace Treaty allowed me to let Osaka's Warrior garrison continue its exploration, rather than respond to the threat from the Chinese Archer.

Yeah, but be wary about that - you can never know. The French once without provocation rode into my territory with ten calvary. They're very unaggressive, so I told them to get out. They declared war on me. I reloaded the game.

The babs just invaded me with like 50 lbows. I only have muskets and they get rifles. But I have mil tradition and my few cavalry are working wonders with hit+run

When I know I am about to get attacked I offer a ROP to the person about to attack along with any and every deal that will make me pay per gold to the civ about to attack me. This measn taht I get free stuff and that the civ who attacks me will have a bad rep for breaking a ROP agreement. SO far it has work wonderfully. When a Civ breaks a ROP I tend to get allies against them easier than normal (this could be my imagination though).

Don't quote me on this, but I'm almost sure I've read that if you have any sort of per turn deal, and war is declared, you get a rep hit, even if it isn't your fault that war is declared.

I have never had the AI declare war on me when i am trading them a luxury and getting gpt in return. So if they want to trade, they can live ;)

OK, this was handy for me in my current game, sorta. I had been at peace with the Chinese for around 20 years. Suddenly I notice about 10 riders sneaking up to my borders. I go into the diplomacy screen and renegotiate the Peace Treaty and ask 'What do you want for a Peace Treaty?'.

NOTHING is acceptable. There is NOTHING I can give him to continue the peace.

Well, at least I got to attack his units first rather than the other way around.
