If there is already a mod that does this, I haven't found it (and I've been looking all over). All I want is a mod that makes it so my lovable 'scout' unit(s) don't "die out" with the passage of time... As it is, Their only hope is to get a weapon upgrade from ruins, and now that G&K is in, that path dead ends with MGs (An Mg with scout skills being rather less useful than could be to my mind).

If I had any skill with Civ5 modding/scripting, I'd have a go it myself, but for such a mod to be truly great and worth getting, it'll need more than I can provide...

I do have some planning done though, basically, and 'advancement tree' for Scout to be upgraded along...

1) SCOUT:
Basically the existing scout unit, as is, but 'inserted' into the greater tech-tree for 'scout class' units...

2) FORRESTER:
Unlocked by 'Construction' (There-by aligning its upgrade with the Archer upgrade), Str is 1 less than a spearmen, unlocks the ability to take 'combat' promotions (Drill, etc). I was thinking a model based on the old Civ4 longbowman (who used a quarterstaff for hand-to-hand), the obvious change being the lack of a bow, they would use the quarterstaff all the time, remaining a melee only unit...

3) EXPLORER:
Unlocked by 'Compass' (seems realist enough, the invention of the compass WAS a major enabler for longer and further-reaching expeditions). Str is around that of Pikemen (without the anti-cav bonus). Gets +1 to movement, and a bonus (25%?) to combat strength when not on the home landmass (Kinda like the Spanish Conquistadors, who can found cities, but only on 'foreign' landmasses). I think Civ4 had a unit that was pretty much exactly right (it might have been Civ3). I have also see a "Conquistador Musketman" custom unit that could be adapted quite easily, give him a settler pack-mule and a native scout or two, and done!

3) SKIRMISHER:
Unlocked by 'Rifling' (Think 'light infantry' of the 18th - 19th century. Germanic Jeagers, English Green-coats, etc). This is pretty much a carbon copy of the 'Skirmisher' unit introduced by the "Balanced Sniper Mod" (), with the exception of the ability to retain the promotions of previous units in the chain (the +1 movement of the Explorer, all 'scout' promotions), and maintaining their ability to take 'scout' promotions. However, they 'adopt' the ranged abilities of the "Balanced Sniper Mod" Skirmisher (The 'unique' promotion tree could be merged with the 'scout' tree perhaps? - to prevent 'clashing' with the 'ranged' promotion tree). Visually, the "Balanced Sniper Mod" unit covers all that is needed, though there is certainly scope to make something more unique...

4) RANGERS:
Unlocked by... (Okay, now I'm a little unsure... Same time as marines? Whatever it is, it should fit with the WW2 era, these guys are clearly inspired by the the various 'early' varieties of 'special forces' that started to appear during the WW2 period).
Much like the 'Skirmisher', this unit borrows much from the "Balanced Sniper Mod" - specifically the second-stage unit of that mod, and could, like the Skirmisher, be a partial copy of that unit, with the addition of the 'scout' promotions and abilities... The same goes for visual representations of the unit...

5) SPEC-OPS:
Unlocked by... (Again, this one is a little harder to place... I'm thinking same time a mech-inf? The specialized radios and similar gear were to bulky before that period of time...). 3rd times the charm eh? Like the last two, this unit is also inspired by the "Balanced Sniper Mod", and specifically the 3rd-tier 'Modern Sniper'. Like the 'Skirmisher' & 'Ranger', it could safely borrow much from the "Balanced Sniper Mod" unit, again with the exception of retaining the 'scout' promotion tree (and all acquired promotions). The 'visual' for the 'Modern Sniper' from the "Balanced Sniper Mod" is all but perfect as-is too...

((Please note, I intend to contact the creator of the "Balanced Sniper Mod" myself, to see if he's "cool" with his mod being used as inspiration and/or directly adapted - If your not him, please make sure to obtain his permission before using anything from his mod))

What part of this do you want scripting for? Other than art, it looks like a straight xml edit

Jonarus - You might be interested in trying out this mod that whoward69 graciously made for me. It makes for a series of scouts and their successors that are optimized for scouting and retreating, not fighting mainline units. I find it to be very interesting and fun to use in games.
