It seems like research packs are far to cheap. I was able to keep 4+ going at the same time. Around 150-200 turns i was 10 techs ahead of everyone else. This was on lvl 6 difficulty.

for only 200,250,300 gold what better to spend your money on? City-stats are nice but your paying 250 gold for a quicker growing cities or some culture when u could be getitng techs.

buying building/units is nice but most cost around 500...

I've seen them go up to 900 for marathon games which is multiple lightbulbs for a single coin... It's chump change with the easy exchange system... A single resource for 90 turns means you have a free tech every single time... They trade 1:1 1 resource for 900 coin...

You can do this the turn before your pact and do it over and over and over and over again..

not only cheap, but you can get your tech instantly by declaring war on your trade partner

While tech trading in civ4 did seem quite artificial, in some ways I think these are even worse. You pay a fixed cost each time for a random tech and it makes absolutely no difference whether you make the pact with the mightiest civ in the world or the weakest guy with one city. Also, with the AI trading so easily and the lack of penalties for trading with the AIs enemies, it is not really a question of diplomacy, but only dependent on how much money you have in the bank
