I just played my first game at the easiest level-Pilgrim. As a loving veteran of the original colonization for DOS, I was very excited to play this remake. Despite the removal of the revolutionary army for the player and foreign intervention in the War of independence, everything looked pretty solid until...
Until the King began adding 4-5 units to the Ref every couple of turns in response to me adding... uhhh... say *one* soldier to my forces. In the original game the King would only add one unit at a time to the REF and he would message what kind of unit. Even with this slowed military build up, you still had all of the promotions to the continental army and foreign intervention to bolster your chances of success. It was a good game, an exciting ride, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the end. In this remake however it is anything but. To put this in perspective, I declared independence with 20 turns remaining. I had 6 prosperous colonies with a total colonial population of 84. The King had *88* units in the REF. He literally invaded with more military forces than the entire population of the United States! Besides being completely a-historical, these numbers are simply ridiculous for a strategy game, especially at the cake walk difficulty level.
This I guess is why I have seen so many people posting exploit strategies like "Zero Bells" in order just to have a shot at winning. Unfortunately, all of these exploits rely on ripping apart some fundamental element of the game and making it much less fun in the process. I simply refuse to do that and have resorted to using the world builder eraser function to simply wipe from the planet 30-40% of the King's units. I have never had to use cheats before to play a game, and this irks me somewhat. Have other players had similiar experience, or am I way out of line here? Thanks.
