Ridiculous REF

I just played my first game at the easiest level-Pilgrim. As a loving veteran of the original colonization for DOS, I was very excited to play this remake. Despite the removal of the revolutionary army for the player and foreign intervention in the War of independence, everything looked pretty solid until...

Until the King began adding 4-5 units to the Ref every couple of turns in response to me adding... uhhh... say *one* soldier to my forces. In the original game the King would only add one unit at a time to the REF and he would message what kind of unit. Even with this slowed military build up, you still had all of the promotions to the continental army and foreign intervention to bolster your chances of success. It was a good game, an exciting ride, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the end. In this remake however it is anything but. To put this in perspective, I declared independence with 20 turns remaining. I had 6 prosperous colonies with a total colonial population of 84. The King had *88* units in the REF. He literally invaded with more military forces than the entire population of the United States! Besides being completely a-historical, these numbers are simply ridiculous for a strategy game, especially at the cake walk difficulty level.

This I guess is why I have seen so many people posting exploit strategies like "Zero Bells" in order just to have a shot at winning. Unfortunately, all of these exploits rely on ripping apart some fundamental element of the game and making it much less fun in the process. I simply refuse to do that and have resorted to using the world builder eraser function to simply wipe from the planet 30-40% of the King's units. I have never had to use cheats before to play a game, and this irks me somewhat. Have other players had similiar experience, or am I way out of line here? Thanks.

I completely agree that the lowest difficulty level should provide an easy game to encourage new players. This has been a major fault right from the start, but has been improved to some extent by the patch.

However, it is still possible to win the game against a large REF. As in the original game the King only lands a few troops at a time. You don't have to beat the whole REF at once, just those who land each turn. Don't be put off by big numbers on the Revolutionary Advisor screen. I always build liberty bells right from the start. It is part of the game and I enjoy beating my opponents to the best Founding Fathers. This means I often face a REF of 400+ but I still regularly win the game on the top difficulty level.

Wow Dalgo I'm impressed. :)

I do not think I have the skill or patience to beat an REF with 400+ units. Even if the King can only land 15 or so every other turn, I do not have the firepower to kill that many, heal, and repeat. Also, after 12 turns or so your major coastal cities will have their defense bombarded down to zero so fortification will provide no advantage. I would be interested in your strategy, but I will never be more than a casual player of this remake. Thanks.

The amount of time it takes for the King to offload his troops depends on the number of Warships he has. With a large REF there are lot of Warships and I usually find the War lasts around 20 turns. Yes your ports do lose all their defences but fortunately the enemy rarely attacks them directly, preferring to land beside them instead. So if you wipe out all the troops as they land they never get to assault your colonies anyway.

A strong liberty bell strategy does result in a large REF but it actually makes them easier to beat. By amassing the majority of Founding Fathers my own troops become so strong they rarely lose a fight, especially once they have received a few promotions. I usually have fewer than 20 casualties over the whole War of Independence.

I have a strategy article that is mainly aimed at the Revolutionary level but a lot of the tips apply to any game:

Thanks for the reply Dalgo. I loved your article BTW, will definately change some of my tactics in my next game!

You're probably not playing right. If you have lots of colonists and guns/horses, defeating the REF should just be a matter of time and not difficulty.
