Of the game called Rise of Nations. It looks similar to Civ but I think it's real time. Have you played it ? How does it compare with Civ IV ? Is it different enough that it worth Civ vetrans having a look.

There are a few elements that make it resemble to Civilization, like cities, boundaries, improvements, bonus resources, wonders, everything is however blended to the needs of an RTS, so it is hard to make a paragon with Civ, even if the two games share *some* similaritities.

So RoN is a warfare oriented RTS, with a nice economical system. And yes, it is more accurate to judge RoN more similar to Age of Empires rather than Civilization, although the former doesn't share the 'epic' scale view that both RoN and Civ have. Like the fact you could easily build up a huge-looking army and you could watch your tiny and numerous men marching in compactness, everything made you feel you were commanding a nation, or an empire, not a simple tribe or a faction 'of the entire'.

Love RoN - hate CivIV
(Huge Civ-fan in the past, but with CivIII it started to go all wrong, very baadly wrong)

Today you can most likely find this game quite cheap so defenitely worth thew try :goodjob:

It has more of a RTS twist to it and spans from the Ancient Age to the Modern. It's completely different than the TBS game of Civ4.

I've been playing the demo for RoN and it's like AoE with Civ complexity. Like AoE is pretty basic, build up the army and attack. But there's more to RoN which is why I favor RoN, but then again, I suck at both (I find real time to be very hard for me, except maybe LOTR: Middle Eart), I guess it's that I move really slow. I have to actually get the game to improve. Which I probably will.

That's why I like RoN. It has a Pause button. :D

I've been loving the RTS genre since the days of Dune II, but I know I'm never going to be really good at it. I am simply too old and too slow. Oh well. :(

So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there's a Pause function in Rise of Nations. I can halt the course of events whenever I want and issue move, build and attack commands, order units, conduct research and so on, all perfectly at my own pace. Then I unpause the game and watch all those commands being executed simultaneously. It's simply amazing! :goodjob:

Why is it so amazing?
Many RTS have this feature I think

Sure, almost every game can be paused. But that's not what I mean.
What I mean is there aren't too many games that allow you to actually issue commands while in pause mode. Of course you have Bioware's RPGs such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but I can't think of any other RTS games besides RoN that can do this trick.

I would say one of the best real time strategy games but lacks one important factor of "diplomacy". It has diplomacy options but they are very limited.

Also I consider it BRUTE FORCE type game. You know that you're going to win the WAR if you multiply your units. The level of units is same. There is no difference in individual unit capabilities.

What about Alliances? I don't think so.

Overall I'm a supporter and a fan of this game.

Thank you

You can set teams when you create a game. I haven't played with the options, but i'm pretty sure you can do 2v2, 4v4, or custom teams.

If you have the right game type selected you can form alliances after the game starts as you meet the other players. I think the default game type doesn't allow it (hover over the game types to see which ones allow it).

Also I consider it BRUTE FORCE type game.
Armies generally lead to victory, but if the alternate victory conditions are enabled there are ways to win without too much need to military dominance. Industrial age on becomes very difficult to rout an entrenched enemy. You also need to stay at the current tech level of the enemy you are fighting or a weaker force can decimate your units.

Age of Empires 1 does not allow order entry during pause.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got Age of Kings and it allowed order entry and map scanning during pause.

I have the Gold edition with the Conquerers expansion. I don't know if AoK allows this without the expansion.

I can't play AoE 1 because it is RT only and simply nerve racking.
AoK is now playable.

I have been thinking about getting RoN with the expansion. It looks like an interesting combination of AoK with Civ.
I hear you can play a game in an hour instead of huge epic long lasting games.

Rise of Nations is an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game and thus I don't think you can really compare it to Civ 4. Its like comparing bread to a patio. Which is better? The patio because its worth more? The bread because you can't live without it? Anyways...
I find it a very enjoyable game, and play it quite often. I often play it multiplayer. Its my favorite RTS :D
