I am not sure if this has been posted before sorry if it has!

Today I was playing a game and I noticed (as I usually don’t leave the music on) That the music changes with the eras , then I got curious to see what the music would become like when you got to the modern era. I didn’t feel that the music chosen really reflected the “modern” era
So here is my question chose 10 tracks if you were working on civ4 team which you would have play in the modern area.

Let me throw down some rules

No songs with curse words.
No songs under 2 minutes
No two songs by the same artist
No songs before 1950s I guess (I am not sure about this at least before 1900s)
Try and get songs from each decade if possible so not just a bunch of 70s songs.
Nothing to heavy or Niche.

Here is my 10 (btw this does not reflect my musical taste just tracks which I would I would place for modern era.)

1. Buddy Holy - Peggy Sue
2. Bill Haley & His Comets -"Rock Around the Clock"
3.Chuck Berry - School Days
4.Elvis - Love Me Tender
5. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby
6.The Rolling Stones- (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
7.Queen -Bohemian Rhapsody
8.Kiss- Rock And Roll All Nite
9.Van Halen- Jump
10.Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (or Beat It)

Well that’s mine I tried to show the evolution of rock and roll… as well as my minimal knowledge of rock & roll let me. The 1 song which I cut was Prince-Purple Rain.

Your song list is complete crap. Besides, the royalties on those songs would be prohibitively expensive.

The correct playlist, of course, should be wall-to-wall Skinny Puppy songs.

All the current Modern Era music is by John Cage, whose best-known composition is "Four and a Half Minutes" - 270 seconds of silence, and I wish they had chosen that instead of what was actually picked.
On the principle that the Modern Era starts in 1920 (normal speed, when the time per turn becomes 1 year) then how about music from Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds and the rest of the Dixieland greats, with perhaps something Cajun ?

They should play modern, serious music, classical inspired and jazz, not teenage crap music!

I'm not familiar with all of the Modern era soundtrack, but I know John Adams wrote some of it at least.

I think we're not taking royalties into account here. And his list was fine, though I think he picked the wrong songs but the right artists. And it's only a suggestion.

The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones would have to be in there. I'd also throw in Pink Floyd, Queen and Michael Jackson.

Getting a bit more specialised, I'd also want Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac and if we're getting up to truly modern times, Oasis.

Ha, I was just thinking about this the other day, they really should kick in to more modern music after Rock'n'Roll is discovered. Chuck Berry, Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Stones should all be in there, or perhaps just put the whole Pet Sounds album. And some Velvet Underground, I'd prefer Heroin but I think Wildside would work as well. And you'd need some hip-hop, which is another form of rock music as well. Obviously no cursing, so I'm thinking A Tribe Called Quest, RunDMC, Biz Markie, etc.

And "Above the Clouds" by GangStarr is the perfect song for Civilization, as the music just fits completely with the game and it starts with a speach from JFK about reaching out into the Heavens.

Is this something that's moddable?

What might be a better idea for a mod (and would provoke less difficulty with making everyone happy / making the civfanatics people have to sweat about whether we've got the licensing fees for the songs we're giving to other people) would be to have a mod that creates 4 folders within the civ file structure, into which you could drag your personally preferred (& personally owned) songs. Then we could trade suggestions with each other.

As an aside, I can't get the options menu to recognize my digital music. Is Civ4 only mp3 friendly?

Chuck Berry of course! Meant to add him to my list. I would put him before the Beatles and Elvis any day.

Johnny Cash is a bit either way, he did good music, but enough to be considered among the classics?

I just picked the songs by the artist which had number 1 in the most countries. Basically "biggest hits"

Yes i was trying to think of a hip hop song i could put in i was leaning towards de la soul but on second thoughts i decided against it.

I am glad underseer that you think my song list is crap, you like skinny whatever nuff said

Any musical list is going to have people who are for or against it, don't let it bother you.

Music is a very powerful thing, and people cvan be very passionate about what they percieve is good music and what is not. Doing it by using statistics was a good idea though.
